Work on the railway overhead electrics, mostly nights/weekends - All pre planned work when it can all be switched off - so as a result we do get a lot of downtime.

Recent shifts over the summer have been a bit thin on workload! typically leave house about 9pm and travel to depot for between 10pm-11pm - Drink some tea have a snack and catch up with the other guys, fill in a weekly timesheet or holiday form and read/sign any safety briefs, or attend a weekly safety brief meeting, drink some tea, moan about rosters, drink more tea, make sure the vans are clean, then get told we're not doing any work that night, so have another cup of tea, then go home about 1am. On a busy night we might go out for 3 hours of 'work' aswell.

I like it as I get to travel about a bit with work and get plenty of time to do other things when everyone else is busy.

  8. i work in retail management for a company called BCF( boating camping and fishing) we have a chain of now 120 stores nation wide in Australia, like any job where you are dealing with the masses there are good and bad days but is mostly enjoyable, dealing with head office and thier boffins is the hardest part of the job really

  9. Power station shift Manager, 12 hour shifts, Day shifts are hectic, nightshifts, think more Homer Simpson (Donuts feet up and go on TLB!). Two days, Two nights, four days off do that for 7 weeks and then get 18 days off. I can't complain!

  11. I used to get up at 6am, get my kit ready. Drive to any number of sites over S England and do tree work, forestry, landscaping/planting contracts. ( I helped plant a goodly proportion of the trees/landscaping around the channel tunnel and M20 links). Then I bust my shoulder (a number of times) and was forced to get an office job. Somehow fell into insurance (cos no-one wants to do it).

Now my day consists of driving to work at 8.30am in the camper. Sit at a desk all day listening to:
    - customers complaining their premium is too expensive, their claim hasn't been paid, they don't want to have legally require covers such as Employers Liability
    - Insurers complaining that policyholders have not told the truth so they won't pay their claim, haven't paid their premium etc.
    - co-workers complaining about customers (see above) and insurers not doing their job (not reading emails properly, issuing documents incorrectly)

I get back in the camper to drive home at 5- 5.30pm and I'm home by 6pm (if it behaves). I'd like to be able to climb trees and swing chainsaws around etc, but don't like dislocated shoulders every day, so I put up with the job as it pays the mortgage and keeps food on the table, the hours are OK and the commute is short.

I dream if finding a way of making a living from wood turning & burning.
