I havnt yet. Next on the list before I do the oil seal.
    Edit
Although when the engine wasn’t apart, I did grab the pulley and gave it a tug. I could hear a clunk, but couldn’t see movement, if that helps.

The old circlips are fine. I think you can be too careful, you know…

  6. Bay owners!

Here's a top tip: if you've stuck a Ctek up his bottom to charge the batteries overnight, don't forget to unplug it before trying to drive off to the shops

  7. Built many engines then ??

If you`re happy that`s fine - circlips are only holding the pin in place right ??

A few, and they have never gone wrong.
First one I ever built was a Coach engine, on the YTS in 1985, when I was just 16.Bit more lifting gear and a pit needed to get that one out!

Rebuilt a couple of Mini engines, and a few bike engines.
All were fine. Never replaced gudgeon pin clips apart from when they came with new pistons, tbh. None never ‘pinged out’.
Always made sure they were nice and flat before replacing.
You ever had any go wrong?
You sound as though you have…

  11. Stuck (literally) the vw badge on the front. I do like the contrast of the different colours, I must admit. The bumper is still a while away from getting its turn under the wire wheel.

  12. No , but then again you wouldn't want anything 'going wrong' at the TT , or any other race to be honest - penny pinch all you like , it'll be fine .

  14. I am tackling the wiring while my engine is still out. I pulled the wiring harness out from back to just under the front belly pan. Replaced the metal tube with PVC:

A fair amount of bodgy wiring is getting replaced. I am using OEM crimp connectors. This is the oil pressure sender wire. I painted all those green dots on it. I know it’s crazy, but I think I’m in good company.

  15. It’s responded well to its first scrub. First of the seals installed. Resorted to cutting into the frame at the crimp with the dremel. I was as surgical as I could be and it’s unseen so… the new seal is a good replica. FF4752C7-9739-4CA5-B3EB-8A316CD74C10.jpeg 44780679-CA8E-404B-BEE0-02660E68FF24.jpeg

  18. Not if you buy the right ones .

Crack on , you've supposedly built plenty of bullet proof engines so know far more than most - glad you managed to hammer the gudgeon pins into your shrunken pistons . Obviously you checked them for little end play and the piston rings were within spec ?

  20. I wish you were around with this timely advice when I built my 1st engine

It still took us on our first 3000 mile European tour but the upside down pistons did rattle a bit when cold :D
