  6. 232 miles as the crow flies according to that Siri bloke
So probably a two day jaunt
Bit far for me to pop to help
Plus your doing great I think

  7. I think "bumbling along " would be more appropriate for me!

  8. From bumbling great things grow

I have a lot of respect for people that are willing to give things a go

  9. Pfft not going well.
Engine sounded great yesterday and ran well, just too fast at idle.

Today I've fitted the choke 12v feed and the air box. Choke operation is ok.

But doesn't want to run, sounds crap.
Managed to check timing which is ok I think. Tried adjusting carb but that not helping.

The valves are supposed to be at 0.2 (according to my engine blurb) which zed said was normal for a "new" engine while it loosens up, the go back to 0.16 (?) After few hundred miles.

Do you think they need to be reset to 0.16 now and that's why it's not running right?

  10. No idea mate but hope you get it sorted

  11. Set the valves to what they should be. Set your carb back to its initial settings. Don't fiddle with it until the timing's right.

  12. What is right for valves though? 0.2 as it says in the engine booklet, or 0.16 like it normally is?
The timing seemed ok, that's why I moved onto carb, I thought that would sort it out

  13. The valve gap won't make much difference - wider will just be noisier. That's assuming they've been done in the right order. How did you set the timing?

The carb is the one you hard refurbished, yes?

  14. No idea if it's normal but worth a mention...

Turned motor over by hand looking for timing marks, was a bubbling/gurgling type noise a couple of yimes

Had water/clear liquid spraying (not constantly) out the exhaust while it was running. Sniffed it, wasn't petrol

    Some white smoke from exhaust.

Can't understand why it ran and sounded so sweet yesterday (albeit too fast), then today sounds crap and won't run right

  15. Are you getting fuel from the pump? Worth checking. Pull the hose off the carb into a jamjar and turn the engine over. Fuel should come out in spurts. Pull your dipstick out and sniff it. Any smell of fuel?

The water from the exhaust is likely just condensation, white smoke a bit of oil burning off. New engines make all kinds of smells.

  16. You haven't knocked the wire off the idle solenoid while connecting choke ??

  17. Sorry Jez, something really serious came up and only just got back home.:(:(

Leave the valves set to .20 as specified by the supplier, they will make no difference to how it runs, what's bad about how it runs now, smoke out of the exhaust in this temp in normal condensation from the exhaust is normal too

  19. Haven't had a chance to get back on it due to busy with work.
However went out to get some tools yesterday and instinctively had a look underneath.
There's an oil leak frtom the case joint on the bottom, very rear of engine. Its been sitting with oil in it since Friday, there's a drip on the case getting reafdy to drop, and a 2 inch stain on the road underneath.
There is plenty of evidence of that green gunk (Curil ????) having been used in the case join.
Yeah I know these old sh1tters leak but .......
    Should I be concerned?
