Won't go into gear

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Tom cresswell, Feb 23, 2019.

  1. Afternoon All!! Looking for some help. My bus won't go into gear. Its a '73. I've had my linkage out, all new bushes (plenty of grease), gearbox out New clutch, clutch plate and release bearing. Shifter plate is loose enough to hold gearstick but can still move. So I start my engine push the clutch and all it does is crunch. The clutch cable is tight, (pedal comes back up on its own) . What am I missing?????

  2. Sounds like you need to take up more slack on the clutch cable or adjust the shifter plate , just check all the basics .
Does it slip into gear with the engine off ??

    :hattip:

Can you select the gears with the engine off?

So when you said ‘My bus won't go into gear’ you didn’t mean it wouldn’t go into gear.:) The clutch isn’t disengaging; either an assembly problem or the cable isn’t adjusted correctly. How much free play at the pedal do you have?

Did you try the clutch plate. The early clutch plate is different. I take it you’re the Tom we met at dubfreeze with the single port engine in a late bay?

We had a similar discussion at Dubfreeze.

Basically with an early style clutch the clutch release bearing is different to work with a three lever style clutch and later release bearings go with clutches with many fingers.

To use a later clutch with an earlier release bearing you need a spacer ring as otherwise when you press the pedal it does not release the clutch. The early one is top right.

See Mike’s reply above Tom. It was Mike and I you were talking to at DF. I think his pictures and explanation say it well!

  13. Ah! Hello again guys. I'm running on the late release bearing so should all match up

So to be clear. The box is a late box. The engine is early. You have the late clutch plate and spacer. The gears select and you have tried turning the wheels or drive shafts when it’s in gear or other test. You then marry the two and it won’t select?

Excuse my typos, the phone is doing my typing as it seems to know best!

  15. It's a 3 rib gearbox, engine is a 1600 single port. I have attached engine and gearbox out of the bus, turned the crank pull and it turns the gearbox. I put it in the van and it won't work. Makes me think something to do with the clutch cable? Maybe needs tightening so that it fully releases the clutch

    Yep sure did!

I did wonder if it was a dodgy batch of clutch cables
