Winter Protection

  1. Cant find anything on the site for this but how do you all protect your bus over winter (especially those keeping the bus outside). I've got the JK bus cover which is on, and plan to roll it 1/4 turn on the tyres every month or so, but what else is a good idea? Disconnect battery?

Also as my carbs are going for refurb, what should I do specifically with that as they are going to be off a while. Was thinking cling film and rag over the manifold and the same over the fuel pipe as it wont be connected to anything.

    Cheers

  2. definitely disconnect the battery.. I'd be tempted to get the battery off and have a trickle charger on it to keep it conditioned!! That's if you have somewhere that you can put it? (not on a concrete floor, as this kills car batteries)

some rag, a couple of carrier bags and some tape will do for the manifolds

damp traps inside the van are also a good idea too... keeps the van pretty dry :)

You guys know if the JK cover is any good? We where thinking of getting one over next few weeks

  4. my mate gave me his spare one this week. it was dead easy to put on , fits well. Not sure what the long term advantages are, apart from keeping the bus clean and algae free. I feel better knowing she is wrapped up. We are going to drive her every week. :)

  5. Hi,

JK covers are OK. Make sure you loosen it and give it an airing every now and then as condensation does still build up inside. Also, if you can, take the handbrake off, leave it in gear and/or chock the wheels. Saves the rears sticking on!

Moisture traps are a good idea.

Also, speak to your bus every week, I'm sure they appreciate it ;)

  6. empty out any water tanks kept in the van.

    keep the van vented.

check all rubber seals are doing their jobs and are not moisture traps

  7. I had/have a JK cover - it got ripped to shreds last winter when it snowed - it got damp, cold and when the snow fell off the side it ripped the whole thing wide open.

But it is ok - I fixed it with tent repair strips and as has been said before - air it out every now and then - Its also a pain to get on with just one human - so find a friend/wife/lover and get them to help.

  8. I have a jk cover, I plan to every week on (depends on weather) to fully or part me remove my cover.
    To let it breath.
I also have removed the battery.

I also wanna strip the inside :)
Get some work done over winter

  9. Don't forget to check your antifreeze! ;)

  11. One thing I forgot to mention is to change your oil...

something I read recently about the hydrocarbons in the oil going acidic while the engine is stood, and it attacks the alloy of the engine case..

  14. Also you could use instead of expensive moisture trap's is a couple of bowl's of salt or rice left around inside the van will do the same thing and are alot cheaper ! 8)

  19. i could do with a cover at the moment but once the van is on the road its on the road as with all the work ive done to get it there im not letting it sit over winter i want to drive it snow rain i dont care lol
and with all the wax oil under it it will be fine >:D

  20. Saw this on a thread in the Earlybay forum if it help on cover choice. :)

Anyone needing a cover might be wise to head down to www.coveryourcar.co.uk and get themselves a stormforce all weather cover, 160 quid, but since theyre out of stock for 4 weeks or so theyre sending out their discontinued monsoon cover (waterproof winter cover) worth 120quid as a temporary fix, and allowing you to keep that once your stormforce arrives.

Obviously with it being discontinued, limited stocks remain,
