What jack do you carry?

  1. I have got a big trolley jack and in the van the original vw jack, I don't trust jacking on the original jack or points I was thinking of carrying a bottle jack,
What has everyone else got onboard?

  2. Had a similar thought. It was suggested to me to try and get a small trolley jack rather than a bottle jack though. Mainly to ensure clearance.

  3. Daniels as well. And a T2 Brazilian scissor job.

  4. Factory jack... but then I know how good my JPs are!! :)

Bottle jacks are a bit of a no no, unless you're on a hard flat surface, and even then I'd be wary!!

  5. kilmo: get your jacking points fixed and buy a Brazilian!

    A trolley jack is slightly...absurd.

I've got a scissor jack from something big like a Transit/Sprinter, its more than adequate for the job, but I'll also be carrying a small square of plywood to rest it on, as its sods law you'll get a flat in a muddy field.

I assume a previous owner removed the original jack to save weight.

  7. Like many others, I wouldn't dare use the standard VW jack on 30+ year old jacking points.

On the road I've a small bottle jack and various blocks of wood. I've not yet have to use them to change a wheel.

For home use, I use a trolley jack.

  8. I have the original bilstein jack in the van but i dont use it as I dont trust it that close to the body work. so Ive got a compact CLARKE trolley jack which I use with a 8 inch cube block of wood that i keep under the bed as to spread the load of the jack. works pretty well

  10. ^^ This

My JPs are 34 years old... only one needs replacing... I know that as I test jacked the van on all of them, and one made crunching noises :D

  11. I think I need a new jack, had this one a while but think its had it now.

  14. large scissor and a couple of short lengths of decking timber. Only thing I actually really trust is my trolley jack but you cant take that everywhere!

  15. Bottle jack plus two blocks of wood one above one below to give me the height, provide stability on the ground and because my jacking points are not to be trusted.

  16. I dont. I keep my AA card handy. As its standard height I can slide under for most things. Although so far the only thing I know is changing a clutch cable!

i use a couple of trolley jacks at home and i carry the standard with me under the seat, i've no idea if it works though.

  18. ^^^^ this is exactly what I've got. I have a pair of 4 ton bottle jacks, and I keep one in the van, one at home, so when doing stuff at home, I use them both together for things like lifting the entire rear end in the air, but when on the road, one is hefty enough on its own to lift the van for emergency stuff like wheel changes.

The two blocks of wood are important for stability, and a bottle jack is the right combination of compact size and lifting ability. This is the one I've got:

I wouldn't trust a scissor jack to lift my dog.

  19. I carry my trusty trolley jack with me, goes under the RR bed. I tried the orig jack once, scared me to death. I believe they are known as widow makers!
