It seems like whole generations must have rode for miles and miles on Raleigh bikes. Happier times I'm sure.
My first bike was a purple Raleigh Tomohawk which didn't have working brakes for the first couple of days. I broke one of the twins arms when I crashed I to one of them - it was either Lisa or Tracey, I could never work out which ops so the brakes got fixed. I learnt to do all sorts of stunts on that Tomohawk My dad started working in the local bike shop about a year later, so afterwards I got Raleigh Striker, the several Choppers (why did I not keep them ) a couple of Bombers, a few BMX - made up of spares then I was lucky to have a six month test of a Dawes Ranger - the first British built mountain bike. I've got five bikes at the moment, but only two if them are rideable. Sent from my BND-L21 using Tapatalk
Those cow horns on the Raleigh! I’m after a set of those for a custom GT I’m building for this summer!
Where I was mainly brought up, Selly Oak there were 3 huge bike factories up until the 60s or 70s. Now most bikes are built the far East - like most stuff. Sent from my BND-L21 using Tapatalk
There is s guy who commutes on a bike with the front wheel removed, I only ever see him in Balsall Heath Sent from my BND-L21 using Tapatalk
For the BMX anoraks, I saved, wheeled and dealed and over the years I had: Ammoco Mongoose Team Champion, I put Curtis Race bars on it, GT layback seat post and Skyway Tuff 2's having bust the ACS Z rims being utterly inept at tricks. BLEM - British Limeted Edition Mongoose race bike, that had all sorts of lightweight kit, Araya Race Lace, Flite cranks, Hutch seat, pedals, bars....I had glow in the dark A'ME grips that I thought were ze nuts! GT pro series as mentioned before. Tommy Brackens (The Human Dragster) and Eddie Fiola (The Flying Banana) were huge inspirations weren't they. PK Ripper that I managed to break! Bust the seat post off on the frame when I crashed it and bike my arm....must be the only one ever broken ever! Couldn't find some one to weld it as I recall it was aluminium. Supergoose. Loved that bike. Raleigh Aero Pro...the only burner actually any good, people forget that 'oval' tubes are only strong on one force vector. I found it too long, weird as Andy Ruffell looked like a short Arse on TV yet rode one! I always wanted an SE Quadangle, any Haro or Hutch but none ever came up. It's funny going to shows watching guys selling utter crap bikes at stupid prices, claiming mid school as old school etc. E.g. Not all 80's GT's had stamped top tubes....errr....they absolutely did mate!
My Sis did the same on her trike! Tried to ride up the slope in the garden, fell over backwards and cut her head open on the wall of the house
I had to give mine back It was absolutely battered as I used to ride it over the slag and waste heaps behind the battery factory - I went through a few tyres Sent from my BND-L21 using Tapatalk
Agree totally, I spent a fair amount of time in Nottingham and there's apparently zero signs they used to be built there, a real shame.
