We had wheelie competitions most days. The start line was my house and the finish line up the Gordon's drive. The first bit was road, but there were not many cars, the end bit was the Gordon's driveway. I built my bike to win that competition as often as I could. 30 yards ( 100ft) was a pretty decent length of wheelie back then on a home brewed bike. It's pants these days I see kids wheelying for half a mile on special bikes.
Dunno, something second hand, but it was yellow so that was fine with me Put wooden lolly sticks in the spokes. Next one was second hand and blue. I really should have taken more notice!!
During the 70's I rode to school every day on my Raleigh Chopper. I loved that bike and then some low life stole it from our front garden. I'd love another one but prices for a Mk 1 have rocketed and to be honest i'd look just plain silly on it. I guess some things should remain as happy memories. Stirlingmoz
I had my brothers old grifter, then I got a new bike for Christmas, No idea what it was called but it weighed a ton and had a whopping spring suspension which I kept snapping! Best bike I had though was one cobbled together from other bits of bikes found down the woods! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I had a trike that I once filled the back box with stones then set off, it tipped backwards with the weight and I cracked my head! Only had my sisters bikes to ride until our American neighbours gave us a broken bike and my dad fixed it. It was super cool. Bigger handle bars than a chopper, bigger front wheel, only rear brake on pedal backwards, and I could fit myself,my little brother and his friend on the seat!! I then bought a second hand 5 speed racer for £40 from local paper. I only had £39 and my parents wouldn’t lend me the £1 as they said you can only buy things when you have enough money! My little brother lent it me On this bike I liked doing things like putting tiny mudguards on and ape hanger and cow horn handle bars. Me on my trike and the type of American bike I had. Mine was orangey bronze with a glittery saddle
It was the best! As you didn’t have a front brake but had to pedal back for the rear brake you could do ace skids . More stable than my friends choppers with their little front wheels. Cos the handle bars were wider you could fit a small child on the handle bars too . I was a bit rubbish at wheelies but my friend could wheelie mine for ages.
Anyone got a pic of @Valveandy on his Brompton, wearing shorts in the winter Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I had a Raleigh Arena! Remember peeling off the plastic off the mudguards and the bar tape being made of hemp....most lumberjacks couldn't match the callouses me and my brother had from riding ours. Bikes when you were small were unadulterated freedom.
