Thanks mate, you only know too well how much time these resto's swallow, & you've got your own fish to fry!
....and on the road for May underside is looking spot on mate ....I think I would definitly go down the shot blasting route on my next bus project if I was to do one ever again
looking well - i like you booth under the van - looks like a big cat litter tray!! great idea - i would have just got it all over the shop- Marc
A small progress update, as have been going backwards after a cock up! Finished the near side chassis rust cleanup, priming/stoneguarding, and suspension arms have all been tidied and painted as per the off side, Just the 1 pic though, Then the mother of cockups, I'd used some aerosol stoneguard inside the rear quarters to try and flatten down/disguise the bottom corner welded joins, not reading the label and just assuming it was overpaintable like the stuff I used to use at work I then applied some heavier textured stoneguard as I'd used on the underside, to then find it did'nt sit well with the 1st coat. As it dried, it cracked and shrank crazy paving style, as I then realised the aerosol stuff contained wax/bitumen. So then wasted a day removing it all again with a scraper and thinners + all the sealer that had been brushed and washed in Back to this.... I've a tight schedule/plan to get the van ready to paint by the Easter Bank Holiday, and it's already behind schedule! I keep praying that some elves break into the workshop one evening and finish the bus off for me overnight!
Some more progress, but I'm back to where I was a week ago! Engine bay in primer now though and all scotched and flatted back, run out of time this evening to get it painted, and not sure if I've enough paint but mixed up some paint to see what it might look like (cheers Paul Weeding for the colour chip) I was experimenting with blues mixes! but think I'm going for the middle colour as this is sea blueish, unless I change my mind this week. Will be getting some paint on this week - a major turning point
That bottom one is more like Laguna Blue, which was a VW colour for things like Golfs and Polos in the 1970's. I agree the sea blue does look good though.
Some paint is on the bus and me, & I look like I've joined the William Wallace clan. No fancy body rollers to help working on the underside here, just an axle stand and a creeper trolley! A messy job, banging my head, getting tangled with an airline, lead lamp, and the restricted height to squirt a spraygun meant pretty much covering myself in paint. Painted the engine bay and underside upto the front crossmember as getting the engine back in is a priority at the moment as its becoming a hassle to move from my storage barn to the workshop. Some action shots! They were clean on! My Braveheart face, or more fitting a Smurf, or something from Avatar...... a good reason to wear a full face mask or use a body roller
Its 2 pac, but its all off now, and there was no blue bogeys, on balance of using an air fed mask though, I dont do enough to hopefully do any damage, I think its the 1st time I've painted topcoat in over 4 years, so limited exposure and all that... H0pefully I'll be ok The missed bits are for later
You can absorb it through your eyes doncha know. Enough to do damage apparently. I'd have hired you mine for a nominal sum if I'd known you were going to paint yourself with 2-pac!
Most people who don't use air fed, dress up in disposables with a hood and a mask that has goggles incorporated. No face exposed. On that subject, at a glance your mask looks inadequate. I hope I'm wrong.
I'll have to look into an incorporated mask/goggled set of disposables as have not seen those. Yep, I'm aware of the risks etc, but as a once in a blue moon job, I'll run with it. The mask is apparently suitable for 2k paints but I'm not convinced, as 3M dont qualify any of their canister masks as suitable for isocyanates. As you know, walk into 3/4 of small bodyshops and most people painting are wearing an old cartridge mask at best, I'm not saying its right but I hopefully doubt the exposure from the 1 hit I've had this evening will do me any harm. With my work I still visit a few workshops where people arent using masks when applying clearcoats which ha got to be storing up trouble for the future.
10 out of 10 bodyshops I know use air-fed masks. Some mechanics who paint the occasional panel use canister but even they are careful not to paint themselves. I'll stop going on now.
No worries Theres some Leepu style places in Peterborough I could show you I will say tho, painting yourself is rubbish
