Using pullers

  1. My puller flew a good six feet across the drive and almost took out one of the headlights on my Golf. I wouldn't do it under the van ...

That's wonky though, it struggled to get a steering wheel off!

  3. You can get a basic hydraulic puller kit for not a lot of money now... no excuse for a garage to not have one really!!

  4. Just to keep in mind mate, what's the diameter of the shaft on the box side? Might be that I can do a bit of careful grinding on my EB puller and make it universal.

You need to be careful and ensure that the laughing shaft is lined up correctly on the chuckle box, tickle slightly on the giggle pin then you should be laughting as things fall to pieces

  7. What one would normally use is a hydraulic puller with two rigid legs that screwed into a bearing plate. The plate being in the form of a split disc held together by two bolts. Each half is slipped behind the drop arm and bolted together and the puller legs attached, being rigid then makes the operation quite easy.

Now I've looked at it closely, the thread on very start of the shaft where the nut holds the drop-arm on is dented meaning I can't get the nut on properly. I think someone's had a go at it before and probably hammered it into the floor... Maybe why they sold it...
Is it fit for the scrap bin or can threads be re-opened out @Paul Weeding @Top Banana Racing @snotty
    Cheers

  9. If you've got a fine, triangular section file, you should be able to chase the threads out, at least so you can get the nut started. The nut will then clean the threads up further. Doesn't matter too much if a few threads at the end are mashed, as they won't be taking any stress.

If the top few threads have been crushed by say hammering on the end of the shaft it's not going to be easy unless you cut them right off as the pitch will have been altered.

I was thinking that, it's probably the first 2 threads that have like a wave in them.
Would it be possible to get the end cut off in such a way the threads would still work?

  13. I have a thread file here, normally sorts that out, you need to pay me and Glynn a visit, 1 stop shop :)
