Using pullers

I'm sure this is a daft question, but is there a knack to using 3 legged pullers? (I'm sure there's a gag there somewhere...)
Still trying to get the drop-arm off of my steering box. As soon as I get any tension on the thing one of the legs pops off of the drop-arm.
I've got no way of holding the box still, so that's between my boots and I'm trying anything from spanners to breaker bars; I've got a small, medium and large puller. All end with the same net result: puller on the floor, drop arm still firmly attached, me swearing.
    Any advice gratefully received.

you need someone to assist you - maybe hold on to the legs to stop them spreading..

worst thing that can happen is them legs spreading open, you end up in a tricky situation :D

  3. Cable ties.
Get it in place nicely with little tension, square it all up and then cable tie the legs in before going for it!

Tell me about it; it was that very event that led me to my soon new title of "dad"!

Are they cheap pullers mate or is it just you applying your usual attention to the job - cba to mess about with this too long? ;)

I don't know if they're cheap pullers tbh, I borrowed them off of my neighbour.
I didn't spend hours I have to admit; probably tried about a dozen times last night and about the same again just now!

  9. can you not on a late bay get the box /drop arm free from bus in one go .....then put in generic vice

It's off the bus, I'm just trying to replace the oil seals which means the drop arm needs to come off.
    Unfortunately I haven't got a vice!

Do the cable tie thing like tbr says and don't forget to get the Mrs to video it. You are funny when mechanicking

She's at work unfortunately; one of us has to be!

  13. Is the centre bit moving off the shaft as it rotates? I've found that to be the main prob when using the usual type. The shaft moves, and the arms go wonky.

My hydraulic puller just a small ram in it that moves straight out - much better!

This sounds plausible. I have never removed one so can't be more helpful. I would guess it is a matter of keeping things lined up for the tension and things to work evenly.

I think it is. The end of the screw sits in a dimple but as I tighten it the whole puller rotates a bit and one of the legs pops off the underside of the drop-arm.
    V v v frustrating!

  16. Some pullers have a swivelly bit at the end, but I haven't found them much better, TBH. Once strain is put on the arms, the screw moves off centre. Maybe a boggo screw-type puller isn't going to do the trick...

  17. You want a 2 legged hydraulic puller ;)

These have got the swivel feet on the ends of the screw but as soon as you get any tension on them they stop swivelling!

I'm sure I do but he didn't have one of those!

  20. Tell him his puller is useless and he needs to buy a hydraulic puller kit ;)
