Yeah I did see that and it sounded a bit vague...not sure if I would take such a gamble as I will have my family in the van and hoping to put a few miles on it. Like you say you could get lucky. I do have a W code 1700 long block from a porsche 914 which was bought in good faith but thought a 2 litre would be better as the van orig. had one fitted. I also have a set of brand new 2056cc barrels and pistons, a good 2.0 case, a rebuilt 2 litre crank and rods with new bearings as well as 2 pairs of good heads. Got a joe Cali cooling kit as well as a porsche cooling kit. There is also webers and dell's ranging from 36's to 48's!
I bought all the above to fit in my bug which is still an ongoing resto! But I suppose I've bricked it when thinking of fitting it to a van....

Brill! Please let me know when you have tested it..never had an injected flat four before...is there any special req's such as fuel pipes etc or will my van orig. been FI as a USA '78?

  3. There you go then, you have enough to build a 2056. What you worried about. Don't bother looking elsewhere!

Probably will have a go at building a motor at some point but would rather start off with something like what Paul will hopefully have for sale soon. Any good resources/manuals which are recommended to help with build? I started to look and ended up on jake raby site and then really started to doubt my abilities!

Not at the moment as I'll probably fit it into my bug when it gets to that point which might be a while yet!

  8. yes it would have been FI, just look for the return pipe on the fuel tank. you'll need an FI fuel pump too but i'm sure that will come with the engine
    :)

  9. Yeah, it'll be one lump with all the parts and loom to get it going :)

  10. Hi ya just reading post and I used to have a f1 engine now gone to carbs and I have blanked the fuel return pipe off with a bit of pipe don't really like that idea so was just wondering if you had any ideas or do I need to put another tank in cheers dude

  11. Depends on how it has been blanked with the fuel pipe?

It is perfectly fine to do this, but the blank pipe should be checked with the rest of the fuel lines once a year

  13. Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get...

So, I bought a type 4 which I was hoping to chuck straight in as its turnkey but its a bit grubby and I like my engines clean. So started to strip everything off and noticed the fuel pump was off so thinking well no wonder its grubby. But it an undrilled case. Turns out the 1700 CB I bought is actually a 2 litre GD :) looks like its had very recent heads and b+p's too.

  14. I need a new engine too :(
Or at least most of one!!
    Cam, crank & pistons!!

  15. What crank do you need??

  16. For a 2.0 GD code engine.
    What you got like??
Sorry to pinch the thread like :D

  17. GD or GE?

  18. GD. They're the same engine but the GE has hydro cam/lifters and square exhaust ports. The 76 riviera I sold last year had a 2 litre GE FI. They're nice engines. Now I know what this is I'm going for a full tear down, will be perfect for my camper!

  19. Mines a GE. Not heard of GD. Thought you had done a typo. :)
I'll have to have a read up about them.

  20. Its a 76-77 bus engine 2 litre with FI and solid lifters, 67hp, 101ftlb torque. Oval exhaust ports. The one I have has carbs though not Fi.

GE is the 78 Fi with hydro cam and lifters and square exhaust ports. Same performance figures
