Hi to everyone! I'm new to this forum and back in bay ownership after a twenty year gap...
Anyhow just bought a rust free westy without an engine so hoping to find a complete motor to slot in. I'm also missing the rear support bar. Anything considered cheers Jay

hi welcome, you'll need deep pockets for a good one.... @Joker @Paul Weeding have you got one for sale?

Starting to realise that now.....my god things have changed in twenty years! I do have a motor in parts but from what I have read these engines need to be put together by someone who know what they are doing so that rules me out! I also need all the tin and the fan, alternator, heat ex's etc etc so thought buying a "good" second hand one would save me some grief....

if you have a blank canvas it may be easier to put a 1600 in then, you're easy looking at 2 grand for all that lot mate. joker and paul build engines they will advise better, one thing to say which i'm sure you know - best to buy a good one at 2 grand than a bargain at 500 quid......

Yeah wasn't expecting it to be cheap but I expect my trans will be all wrong for a 1600 and I do look forward to the better power of a type 4 for getting anywhere. Hopefully there will be something suitable out there. I plan on keeping the van for a long time so will be an investment for future family hols!

  6. Dont have anything here as cleared out all my spare motors a couple of years ago (before prices went wappy). Funny that not that long ago you couldnt give type 4 stuff away and people were swapping them out for type 1 engines. Now - particularly with US imports mostly arriving with type 4s they are the engine to have it seems!

If you can live lfe in the slow lane then you may save £££s by going type 1. Im not a fan as they wouldnt suit my driving style.

Incidentally if you do go type 1 then first dibs on your existing gearbox.!!

Get yourself a good type 4 engine, they come up fairly often , £2k is at the high end, £1k should get you a good one if you look around

  8. I do have a fuel injection 2l that I'll be selling shortly... I've just got to pull it and test run it...

You're gonna be looking at around £900 plus shipping :)

  9. The odd £100 bargain crops up now and again but they're few and far between and usually only good for the ancillaries. £500 should just about get you a complete turnkey, but expect to then pay 3 times that on parts to rebuild, will likely want camshaft, lifters, bearings maybe some head work. That's assuming you do all the work yourself. £1k should get you a good runner but you will want to know and trust the seller and know the engines history. Just because it runs doesn't make it good. I can just about build a bog standard motor for myself with most new parts (b+p's, valves cam etc) for about £2k. That's relying on local shops to do any machining/engineering. One of Paul's specials I'm guessing will come in at around the £5k mark but that will get you power and longevity.

Personally I would avoid any of the £1k long blocks you see which have been 'remanufactured'. In my opinion it's virtually impossible to procure all of the new parts they list and do the amount of work they claim to do for the price. You get what you pay for in the end.

  10. Bummer, I just yesterday sold a really nice turnkey type 1 for £1k. I'll have an 1800 type 4 with 40mm solex carbs up in around 1 month for sale if you don't plump for Paul's 2litre or find anything else. Will have new cam lifters and all bearings.

  16. I've got zero history, apart from one MOT from 2004/5, hence the testing!! :)

Odometer says that it has done a smidge over 52k miles :) And yes, totally complete, ready to drop in!! :)

  17. These guys got me through and I'd never worked on one before !! All top guys !!

  18. Here is a great example on eBay 171285278238

Says the carbs are dells, they look like stock to me, the tinware isn't on it so it looks incomplete. £500. Could be a good engine or could be a basket case, generally it just looks a bit of a mess. You never know what you're going to get. I've just bought a turnkey 1700 for £475 getting delivered tomorrow, I've ignored my usual rule and payed more than double what I usually would, so fingers crossed its all ok and won't need much work.

I've bought 2 type4 2.0ltr's second hand complete with everything, got them from ads on here from different sources, paid £850 each one and theyve both been ok so far.
Places like Fellows Speed shop that do Subaru conversions are worth a call cos they know customers who are replacing them with scoobys.

That's a good idea! Didn't think of that! I think the one Paul has sounds worth a try but seems that there are more engines about than I first thought?
