  1. Found a healthy amount of crud in the cylinders.. from somewhere..
And some damage to a compression ring
    [IMG]
..and was told this could do with a bit more of a clean..

  2. So fixed up the groove with sandpaper
    [IMG]
Refitted oil rings and tested for side clearance..
Set rings with top ring gap at bottom, middle ring gap at top and two oil ring gaps at 10 and 2 o'clock with red and green bits of middle oil ring bit showing
    [IMG]

..and gave the cylinders a damn good home...
    From this

    To this[IMG]
With a good couple of minutes of a drill and one of these cylinder hones
    [IMG]
on slow enough to allow it to leave a 45° pattern on the side walls as you slide it in and out...I did from both ends
And rechecked ring gaps when in cylinder .. hadn't really taken enough to effect gap even with all that cleaning

  3. Checked rotation at each stage of adding something back on... I think it's a case of marginal gains right up to rocker gear going on then it was back to what I thought felt stiff.... and worried.

Hooked up the Start-O-Matic again and watched the starter struggle again.

Noticed starter jumping on flywheel and a light sprinkling of bronze fairy dust all over the fuel pump... decided to strap the engine to the gearbox instead of the yoke it was on.

Also gave the pump a once over when off the stand. Worked fine so concluded petrol in crank case oil must have been coming via carbs so decided to check them too ..followed Ratwell guide http://www.ratwell.com/technical/DualCarbs.html
after checking float valve was working

Step one sorted the fuel I was squirting in at least twice what I should ..adjusted it back down . Wound in and back out all the adjusting screws as recommended as a start.

  4. Bolted everything back together and put it on the gearbox..Filled gearbox with 3.5lts is Castrol's finest..

thanks to the loan of an engine hoist to get it down off stand!

Spun around a treat with the starter properly aligned even though it felt stiff by hand... a few turns to get oil pressure up, connected coil and off she went...

20 mins at 2-3000rpm to bed cam.. it needs a few litres of petrol..

Thanks to all for all your help hopefully bring her along to next Techenders!

  5. Thank you for a great read. Ive just spent the last 2.5 hours reading this post. I'm from the dark side, preparing for a T4 2.0 overhaul and transplant into a Karmann Ghia.

I'll be moving on to MorkC68 Morks Type 4 1800 AP engine project next.

    Great forum by the way

    Thanks again
