Type 1 1.6 timing question!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Robo, Apr 7, 2013.

  1. After getting my camper out of storage from the garage at work it wasn't running very well, first ten minutes it backfired and had a serious lack of power!

I was trying to wait for tekenders next weekend to install my electronic ignition but set about it this morning as I couldn't cope with how she was running!

I'm a complete novice but set to and replaced the coil, plugs, leads and then pulled the old dizzy and chucked one of Accusparks complete vac advanced dizzys, all went well!

Then I static timed it but this is where my question comes as my pully had a number of marks, there was one mark that was more a V which I took as TDC then there is one mark counterclockwise & then two marks clockwise, can someone explain which is advance & which is retarded please?

Oh and which mark should I static time it too?

    Cheers, Robo...

    PS it's a Twin port.

  2. picture?

  3. Do the second mary clockise - it's 7.5* btdc. The v notch is tdc.

  4. Second mary? Damn my macbook. Second *mark* clockwise!

  5. I'm intrigued as to how your macbook went with "clockise" TBH o_O

  6. Sorry I forgot to take pictures before packing up earlier & bombing up my mums for a roast lamb dinner...

So should I have static timed it to the first notch clockwise from the V mark?

  7. Yep...

Sounds like yours is one of the ones with 3 V notches in the back edge of the pulley...

First V is TDC, second is 7.5°BTDC, and the 3rd 10°BTDC

  8. Paul, working clockwise it's got a square notch, then a V notch, then two further square notches (working clockwise) I took the big V notch as being TDC as it deffo looks to been the main notch...

I shall try and get a pic when we get home as I don't have a clue which notch I should be timing it to, lol...

    Robo...

  9. The notches run going clockwise (from memory) 5* ATDC, TDC, 7.5* BTDC, 10* BTDC, so you want to statically time to the first one after the TDC notch.

    My pulley's the same.

  10. Autocorrect's got a mind of it's own. Damn you, Steve Jobs...

Pics would be good, am going through the same thing at the mo, tho I have only one v notch on the front edge of the pulley (nearest the engine), which I believe to be my 7.5 btdc mark, and a very faint dimple on the back edge of the pulley (nearest to me as I look at it) which I think is my tdc. As I look at it the btdc v is to the right of the dimple. Are you not timing it with a strobe Robo?

  12. Sounds sane. The dimple will be TDC, the single notch the timing mark, likely 7.5* BTDC. On some pulleys, VW just marked the timing position.

Just so I have it correct..

    Yellow
    5 ATDC

    Red
    TDC

    Green
    7.5 BTDC

    Blue
    10 BTDC

Do I static time to the green arrow?

  14. I have the strobe but no tipex or white to mark & strobe so using the timing light to static time as this seems much easier & then hopefully learn a bit more at Tekenders next week :)

Hi again Robo, is that not a dimple opposite the yellow arrow? I would say yellow is TDC, with red 7.5 btdc and green 10 btdc. Its usually said you should time to 28-30 btdc at 3000 revs. If you have a tape handy, the red notch should be around 11mm from the yellow notch, and the max advance (your 28-30) is about 45mm from the yellow notch on a stock pulley (if I am correct that the yellow notch is TDC). I am confident someone with greater knowledge that me will be along shortly to either confirm or rubbish what I say :) . I hope to be at Tekenders too, Roddy (Punnet) has a snazzy wee template you can use to mark your timing marks on the pulley, but not sure if he's going or not.....

Ps, you need the strobe to time to maximum advance but you can learn how to do that at the weekend...

Exactly this regarding the marks. Dimple nearest you is TDC, then clockwise 7.5, 10, full advance which as Jaque says should be 45mm round from TDC.

Quite surprised at all the +ve sounding guesswork above before the picture!

  18. Thanks alot guys for all the info & assistance with this but it is obvious need some hands on instruction at Tekenders but for now should I static time to the yellow or red mark, I've only got to get from Leicester to Lutterworth on Friday for my lessons but need to be reassured I wont do any damage on the way?

I shall be raiding the stationary cupboard at work for a tub of tipex :D

  20. I'd say this as well. Red looks like 7.5*, green 10*. The blue mark is way too far around. Possible that someone's filed a max advance mark (mebbe 28*-30*) as the blue. I'd time it to red - it won't do any harm.

Is there a dimple or diamond on the front face of the pulley to mark TDC? There doesn't have to be. (Zips out to garage to check spare pulley...)
