Hi yourself. I don't know him personally but know of him as he is the local Councillor! Man flu has taken hold so no movement on the bus at the mo
Nice one (he is bald now so should be easier to get to his ears....) Another day off (went to work this morning but got sent home) ill - ah well.
07.11.2015 Man flu nearly gone so managed to grab a few hours in the garage. Started to dismantle the CV joints and they don't look to bad so will reuse and pack with fresh grease - a few pics of wear and tear: Will get new boots as they aren't too bad but been on the van for god knows how long! Just need to get the shaft shot blasted. Also removed the stub axle so just need to remove the bearings and then the hub can be sand blasted too. Slow but sure
15.11.2015 Due to illness and family issues not much van work over the last week but today, started on other half shaft and CV joint dismantle and here are the pictures to prove it. CV joint inner cleaned up and put back together ready for grease. Sorry for the blurry pictures.... The half-shaft, grease and 'underseal' removed - ready for a sand blast. What to do with the boots and CV joint outer as the boots are good but need to remove all the old grease, but how do I separate them without damaging anything?
21.11.2015 Already removed the bearings etc from one of the hubs so started on the other one with a few pics. Outside seal The inner seal I had removed the cir-clip but a pic of it anyway. A picture of the inner bearing after removal of the seal. Outer seal removed Removed bearings and spacer and here they are. Far right is the outer bearing and to the left of it is the inner bearing with the spacer next to that. A closeup of the spacer Where the spacer was, the grease looked like new A closeup of the inner bearing Seeing if I can get the boots off now (so cold in the garage...)
Just for interest, why are you you replacing all this stuff? I would never replace old with new unless required by wear, a lot of the time the new stuff is absolute crud, particularly those rear bearings as @MorkC68 will confirm.
With the rear wheel bearings, as Steve says, I'd not replace unless I was forced to. We did our westy ones and ended up with a right nightmare on our hands - the play was worse than the old ones & we couldn't get rid of it. I have some video footage somewhere, even JK commented on how bad they where!!
Not replacing everything. Stripping everything down to check for wear and to see if it could cause a possible failure sooner rather than later. Also, removing everything so I can get all the bits sand blasted and then painted, plus all new grease to give the drive train the chance to go on and on..... But, some bits may need replacing but hopefully not too much. Just going to put an update on and show some pics - let me know what ya think!
A few hours later Got all the boots off (hurrah). Discovered that one of the CV outer joint thingies will need to be replaced as it is showing some metal fatigue Also, need to get this sheared bolt remenant out of the stub axle but need new drill bits as mine hardly made a difference. All for now.
In the end we used taper roller bearings and made a new sleeve part up, we can now take the play up more effectively. It took a few adjustments but the bearing is now settled and needs no adjustment!
Cool - so far all the bearings are looking good so will remove the old grease and fill with new and should all be good
A bit late to this, but I really do hope you arranged to have said tester viciously dry bummed by a bunch of vicious dry bummers.
20.12.2015 Good weather today - thought I would start removing some more of the underseal, but changed my mind. Decided to tackle the rust spots in the bed where the fuel tank sits. Cut out the rust and leave a nice hole. The off side hole The nearside hole Nearside hole welded up (not my best welding, as not done any for some time, but penetration is good so will just need grinding down) The offside hole also welded up - again not the best but ready for grinding. Light started to fade so will see if the weather holds out over the Christmas holiday and see if I can finish of the grinding - won't have to be perfect as will be covered by the fuel tank!! Cheers
21.12.2015 In between showers and stuff, ground down the welds and covered in anti rust liquid. Added some seam sealer to protect it further then a touch of zinc primer.... Followed it with a zap of normal primer That's if for now as getting dark again. Cheers
Build a big blob of weld up on it and wind it out with molegrips The heat from the weld should release it.
