30.12.2015 After doing a service on my daily (oil and filter change) decided to spend some time dismantling some bits kindly donated by Phil (REPHIL off the Earlybay forum) in the guise of some old CV joints, CV boots and drive shafts that he no longer needed (as in surplus to requirement). First, a picture of the wrapped article: One of the units before dismantling (the ball bearings had fallen out of this one and the CV boot was no longer on) Nice and dirty - just how I like it..... After dismantling the bits, most of the CV joint parts were of no use as too damaged So - on to the next assembly.
31.12.2015 So - dismantled the next set of CV joints/CV boots etc and hurrah - managed to find two of the CV units to be salvagable so I now have 5 CV joints and 6 CV boots to choose from The side where the bearings had escaped, thought I would clean them up to check them and all beyond repair (not sure if you can see in the picture) So, in the New Year, plan to get the bits cleaned up properly and put together again with fresh grease, so watch this space Cheers
09.01.2016 Managed to remove the broken stud from the drive shaft (Thanks @paradox ). Put a blob of weld onto the stud then placed a nut over the blob and welded again. Ended it up with this: And, it came out with no problem Also cleaned up the external part of the CV joint and will prep them for a coat of paint soon. That is all I can do for now as out and about....
I don't think mixing and matching second hand CV joints is the best idea , Ther not that much money new
I agree but money is tight at the moment so just want to get it on the road then once passed MOT will look to replace bits with new bits.
23.01.2016 Hurrah - weather warmed up so can do some van stuff Last week I took some suspension bits into work and got them sandblasted: This means today I could clean and degrease (and get rid of someof the sand that managed to creep past the protection I had in place. Some pics - spring plates cleaned and a dusting of etch primer: Phone camera played up so some of the pics taken didn't turn up but here are the hubs after having etch primer and some black paint: Started covering the rear hub carriers with etch: Also a dusting for the drive shafts: Hoping to finish of the spraying tomorrow (ran out of etch primer so will get some tomorrow).
30.01.2016 Bit's finished and ready for putting back together: They are just wating now and so excited to be fitted ;-) Problem I have is I appear to have put one of the axles somewhere and can't find it
13.03.2016 Weather picked up to day so started to remove 'underseal' - worst job in the world!! Nothing exciting to look at but moving forward. A few small areas where the paint has done well but mainly surface rust. Will continue (probably at the weekend) to remove the underseal and once the nearside has been done, will move on to the offside!
20.03.2016 Busy day today so only managed a couple of hours (had to work on the daily first, drop my lad at work, then hurry up 'cos MotoGP season has started so now in front of the box waiting for the Moto3 to start ) Flashed on some etch primer then continued to scrap underseal off - getting there, but discovered more rust hidden by the underseal :-( ... a few pics of the etch..... can you all contain your excitement ;-) ) Put some rust treatment stuff on the gearbox hanger. If the weather continues to be good, might get to flash some etch and topcoat on over the next week or so. That's it for now as ready for the bike racing.
It's a utter ball ache removing underseal and prepping the underside of a bus but it's well worth the effort in the end
Spent today cutting out some rust on the inside of the arch then putting a new piece in (no pics). Will grind back the welds and seam seal then flash some primer over etc.... but busy for the next few days. Nice working in the sun and warmth today!
02.04.2016 Last week I took delivery of a pair of hub/brakes/axle - hope to use all of the parts as they seem to be in good condition A few pics Got the axle nut off the first one OK But not the second one as my whacker tool gave up the ghost Oh and almost finished one end of the nearside rear tub. Just need to order the closing panel at the rear and weld in then start on the other side - a few pics (not exciting at all )
If you chain drill through the thin it's part of the nut ( but not too deep so it damages the thread ) then a quich sack with a chisel and it'll split
