Thermostat Type 4 Engine

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by keithandtrudystype2, Mar 18, 2013.

  1. Anyone know where to source a new one, I don't reckon ours is working that good!

  2. Use a type 1 thermo... They're identical apart from the operating temp.... Which is only 5c between them

  3. Heritage sell them for type 1 as Paul said and state they can be adapted for type 4 which is what I did.

  4. Can someone post a picture of one on a type 4 motor?
Mine has a lever on top of the motor which moves freely and clearly operates some flap or other inside the cases but the rest is missing. (Apparently not unusual for SoCal buses).
I presume it only helps with cold running and the default is the hot running setting?
    keithandtrudystype2 sorry for the hijack.

  5. is there much to adapt then? or does it fit as is...if any of you guys have a photo that would be good...thanks

  6. No probs Top banana, Ratwell seems to think that they are vital to prolonged engine life (our van has just gone round the clock on orig engine)

  7. Yes thats the one, but first check if you can repair the one you have, has it cracked?

  8. Not sure it just doesn't seem to respond to heat....

  9. Check it by removing it and putting it in a bucket of water while looking for bubbles, if the bubbles are coming from around the top of the thermostat(the soldered part) then it can be fixed very easily.

  10. Having just checked my bus after reading this thread an mine is missing from my type 4 engine altogether. How serious is this, can I force the flaps open for maximum cooling in all conditions?

flaps fail in full cooling anyway with no stat, my van hasn't even got the flaps (yet) i have all parts available to reinstate though

  12. From what ive heard doing that keeps the piston cylinders cool , which is not good ,as it increases the wear on the pistons, because as the pistons expand when hot, the cylinders will not expand due to the cool air constantly being blown over them, so they can't get up to temperature so are basically squeezing the pistons.

  13. Get those flaps fitted ricky they help direct the airflow on a type 4

According to the haynes on a type one the flaps dont close unless its well below freezing so not so bad on a summer use bus i suppose to have them missing
However on a type four when there open they do help direct the air so id want them in place

  14. Mine was missing some of the thermostat bits so I put a wanted add on here and got all the bits I required, I think Monkey Harris had most of the bits,
    Steve,

  15. I've posted up a wanted but having looked in the engine bay the rod across the top of the block linking the two sides is also missing.

I'm now not sure if the flaps are even there!!

    no
rod - no flaps...... same as me.

  17. Excuse my ignorance on these engines.....I'm learning!!....But does this mean the engine will likely to just over cool? I'm sure it will take some time to gather all the bits, but presumably it shouldn't stop me from using it in the meantime albeit potentially with more engine wear.......?

it means the engine can't get up to temp as quick or indeed maintain it's correct temp' mine hasn't had the whole lot for the last 2 years of me owning it and i've no idea how long the american owner ran without, i know loads of people without the parts, i've got all the bits to reinstall but still haven't done it - i'm not worried so i would still drive yours.
