Thermostat Type 4 Engine

  1. Ok, thanks Ricky, that gives me some confidence. It looks like I'll be running it through the summer and hopefully build up the bits in time.

You need the flaps, the LH one forms part of the ducting to direct air through the oil cooler.
It's good to have the thermostat too. :)

i agree zed we've done this convo to death over the years, i must reitterate though, i've run with nothing for over 3000 miles in all terrains and it's fine, true the engine will/has no doubt worn without correct cooling but sharpey should be safe in the knowledge there are many vans running with nothing, as with any "modification" done by p/o's the risk is with the end user........

And possibly without the oil cooler flap your oil gets a bit hot and thing tries to escape? It's more the lack of oil cooling once warmed up that would worry me. It'll be interesting to see if it runs cooler on a long run. You'll never know really of course without an oil temp guage to do before and after...

i think we both know my oil gets hot and makes nice rainbows in the rain lol, agree i'm hoping at tekenders we can make a difference to the cooling - my cht gauge should see a difference.

  6. Thanks guys, I've posted up a couple of wanted threads, see what comes of them.

I'll have to run with or without, as have started to book campsites and Eurotunnel..........never make like easy that's what I say.:)

  7. At least we have the flaps and rod, a new cable but what appears like a knacked stat...70 quid for the stat from VWH and JK, eek, wonder if we could get a group discount! I was just thinking, why hasn't someone thought of an electronic system that could do the job, an adjustable stat where the existing one is, an LVDT perhaps to move the rod, perhaps I should invent a system and market it! I suppose the thermostat and wire is fool proof, fail safe and mechanical...o_O

    answered question own.
Remember that the T2 market being a big thing is fairly recent, it wasn't long ago these were regarded as scrap nobody much wanted like any other old tatty vehicle.
Prices have doubled for vans and parts in a few short years. It might be worth the effort for some of these things now, but not so long ago new and second hand parts were abundant and cheap and it wasn't worth it. There are still hangovers like Klok panels sadly...
