@Zebedee yeah i found it this morning before i posted. Was a good read, however a bit too much overhaul going on for my liking, can say i wont be drilling out plugs any time soon lol. But it was interesting. Found a couple of links on youtube too which i watched, but only really to get a feel for what i was going to be looking at. Split the case today though. Went well really. And have a picture of the smashed piston for @davidoft as requested.

Popped it open, and then nearly dropped the side with the driveshaft and camshaft in, nearly. Glad i didnt.

I had a question, when you put them back in, as they are interlocking on the cog end, how do you know what point of each rotation they should meet? My plan was to mark the gear where they met, but when i nearly dropped it they both jumped a bit, so that idea went out the window.

  2. The cog on the crank has 2 dots stamped on it, the large one on the camshaft has 1 dot on it, when it goes back in the 1 dot goes inside the 2 dots

  7. I just rebuilt my type 4 2.0 see my thread and posted video of first start. Its not that bad man just take time, measure up and do it correctly and should be all good. Costs a few quid mind. Im arranging my pics and that for the full build thread, I did originally start it on vzi........Good luck :)

Theres some good advice and people on here willing to offer help and support

Looks like a straight forward rebuild, was the barrel damaged with that broken piston, I bet it was still running ok :)

@davidoft im hoping so. Just waiting to decide if i am going 2l or staying at 1700. All depends on availability of parts. Im starting the hunt today.

  11. You'll need a 2l crank and rods

  12. I have 1800 B&P's if you want them? They'll work with your crank. I guess that'll be the deciding factor as a crank isn't cheap.

You can go to 1800 with your crank on standard parts and I think you can get 1910 over sized pistons to go on them, otherwise as @Paul Weeding says different crank and rods

I think they are solid. But how could I tell for sure?

They are solid!! hydraulic ones have more bits inside and you would be able to push it down in the middle. If you keep the standard cam you can reuse them :)
