Got myself an old 1500 engine that hasn't been run for 15 years odd. Put a spanner in the crank today to see if there was any compression and it didn't budge a bit. Any handy tips on freeing it up or is it a strip down jobby?!?
pull the plugs and put some paraffin or diesel down the bores... fill it right up!! If it's sat for that long, then depending on storage conditions the rings will have started to rust to the barrel walls!!
yes dude plugs out, fill her up!! if it's that seized up, you need to get as much penetrating fluid in there as you can!! I picked up a parts motor recently that had sat possibly that long outside, and the rings had welded themselves to the barrels... had to split the barrels with a grinder to get it to bits!!
petrol is a whole load more flammable than diesel, plus it's oil content is lower, so pretty much a bad idea dude!!
Right. Let me get this straight. Take the rocker covers off, then the rockers. Remove the plugs and fill with diesel?!? Will a 5 litre jobby be enough?
5 litres'll be more than enough its only a 1500. Valves may be seized too, a good shove directly on the stems to check,it ll take a bit of welly, got a monster spring pushing back. If stuck a couple of gentle taps with a big hammer. BEWARE WERE THE PISTONS ARE. Not a good idea on a piston that's at or near TDC
Sometimes I surprise myself how sappy I can be. Will the diesel ******* out all over the place?!? How do you get the diesel out once its done its job?
don't stress it dude!! It's always the obvious answers that stare you in the face!! Like Zed said, if it does its job it'll be in the sump... if you're in no hurry leave it to do it's job over a week!! Failing that, a big bag of kitty litter to catch any spills that might come out!!
Right done all you guys advised. Would it be worth while putting some diesel in the oil filler or is that just madness???
