i can't believe people think this is a good idea

if the government look into this and bring us in line with Europe (like they normally do) then using our campervans for fun will end

imagine only being aloud to drive your van on a Sunday between 10 and 5 and limited to 20 miles from home
imagine not being able to have that summer road trip driving around and stopping where you like
imagine the VW shows were only local people can drive their VW there
imagine only period mods to your van
imagine not being able to take your van to work as it's a nice day and you might pop down to the beach on the way home
imagine no weekend over night sleeping in your van because you can't drive it on the road again till next Sunday
imagine not being able to drive your van into a town/city

i will stick to paying a couple hundred quid tax and use my van when,how and where i want

Nevertheless, at times like these, faced with a large group of people in a situation like this, the government are not going to change the law to give more of us free tax. If anything, they will use the heritage law to say that you either abide by the rules as listed above, or you pay tax like the rest. They could even bring some of the current pre-73 lot into paying tax by a law like that. Kerching! More money for the Exchequer. What's to stop them applying emissions standards to older vehicles? They're requiring retrofit modifications to older diesels for the London Emissions Zone.

And before someone leaps up and says "they can't do that!", from what I've seen of this government and the last, nothing would surprise me. That last Labour lot may have the reputation of being the government of interference, but this current shower aren't beyond a bit of nanny-state-ism if it gives Osborne a few more quid to lend to the IMF.

I'm with Zed. A couple of hundred quid a year is a small price to pay in return for The Man not telling me when, where or how I drive my van.

If you want tax exemption there are plenty of late 72 late bays out there. Having said that I sold a tax exempt late and bought a tax paying one - the tax was nothing compared to the repairs I had to constantly make to the exempt one.

The proportion of vehicles surviving for 30 years is so low that the emissions issue coupled with generally low mileage of these vehicles isn't an issue.

To our benefit, loads of the toffs who run the country have proper vintage cars and no way do they want legislation to stop their free use of those cars.

My bay is tax free, but given a choice between tax free and restricted use or pay tax and no restrcitions, I would pay the tax.

No misunderstanding, but for those of us without a tax-free bus, I think the cost of tax as it stands with no interference from government is OK as it is. Ideally of course I'd prefer not to pay it, but that's not going to happen without a LOT of conditions placed on our use of these vehicles.

Most of those toffs with vintage cars probably only get them out about twice a year, and do nowhere near the mileage we do in our buses. Therefore if they did bring in this heritage law, they probably wouldn't be affected, so don't count on them standing shoulder to shoulder with this cause.

if you can't retro fit your vehicle with something to help emissions then that's when your likely to be unable to drive into city centers/citys

most of the toffs with vintage drive stock or period mods on their cars

this would mean the end of Porsche, scooby, diesel, etc conversions

lowering narrowing beams etc would be out as well
