    Problem Description:
tax exemption was introduced in on classic vehicles as a way ofpromoting this important part of our motoring history and it wasdisapointing when the then government decided to move away from its 25year rolling structure in 1998 to opt for tax relief on vehiclesmanafacture d before 1973.
iunderstand the governments focus on VED impact on environmental factorshowever i feel that owning a classic vehicle myself and only driving iton average 2000 miles a year has much less an impact on the environmentthen buying a new vehicle and driving it 30000 miles a year.
ibelieve that owners of historic vehicles that do not qualify for reliefof VED are under pressure to keep their vehicles on the road as oftenmany have their vehicles maintained by specialists, must pay a premiumon parts and then generally have to pay out a great deal to keep themon the road for others to enjoy.

    Proposed solution:
i would like a debate opened or some room for statistics to becollected to see if the 1973 ruling could be extended by a further 10years, or even as a starting point to include all vehicles manafacturedup to and including 1979.
    Cost or time incurred:
each owner of a classic vehicle that falls outside of the current VEDexemption could save between £100 and £200 per year as many ownersincluding myself opt to SORN their vehicles for 6 months of the yeardue to the VED.

ithink more importantly it would encourage owners of these forgottenclasics to use and show their vehicles off which would benefit themotoring history we have in great britain

    Official response

Thankyou for your Better Regulation proposal about the exemption from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for vehicles registered before 1973. Your proposal has been passed to the Policy and External Communications Directorate at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), anExecutive Agency of the Department for Transport, for consideration.

You suggested that consideration should be given to extending the 1973 deadline to allow more old vehicles to be able to take advantage of the exemption.

However, we do not consider that your proposal should be taken forward.

The current 1973 cut-off date is seen as offering an appropriate balance between the need to protect the United Kingdom’s motoring heritage and the need to encourage environmentally friendly motoring.

People with vehicles constructed after 1973 are naturally disappointed that they do not qualify for the exemption from VED. But it is inevitable that, wherever a qualifying line is drawn, some people will fall on the wrong side.

No further action will be taken regarding your proposal, but we hope this explains the position. We would like, also, to extend our thanks for the time and trouble you have taken to participate in this process.

  4. You are welcome, we have a tax exempt Bay but have another that is three days out from being tax exempt, it is so frustrating.

Lets keep our fingers crossed that they do something then there will be a lot more happy tax exempt vdub owners out there.

  5. Thank you, it s really annoying and frustrating that the small minded bigots will not do anything about it.

Time goes on so vehicles get older and cost more to maintain and run they should reconsider in line with this. They should also be encouraging people to drive classic vehicles and restore heritage by offering a better tax exemption incentive.

Can I have an exemption too from all the other taxes I pay - Council Tax, Business Rates, Income Tax, National Insurance, Corporation Tax, PAYE for my employees and VAT. Please Mr Government. I can't take it no more.

  15. Done.
Agree with you, Baydreams, tho' methinks that won't happen ! :(

  16. i'm not sure i want my bay classed as historic

if we come in line with Europe this would mean limited use of my bay, not aloud in city centres and limit the mileage

if this is the case the 100 and a bit quid for 6 months summer use seems worth it
