Not ordered yet, the one on the box I re-sealed is ok... one I took off the bus is toast. Concentrating on getting the pitman off old box at the mo...and sorting fibre washer for the adjuster nut...

  2. Hydraulic puller may be necessary. Mine exploded off

  5. Worth using the "two hammers " method. Tighten the puller up, then clap either side of the drop arm bush just to loosen the taper. Mine exploded off and nearly took one of the headlights of my Golf out...

    with the nut on... ?

  7. I was foolish enough to remove it...

I doubt that puller would shift it. Looks a bit wide at the bottom also. I left the nut off the first time I did it. It launched across the garage! Won't be doing that again

Found a cheaper one ... I've sent an enquiry to ask if this will fit over a 3/4 splined shaft ...

I'm wondering what the serial number is on the dust cover pointer from N2...

also would you guys recommend just getting another pitman arm?

  11. If you like, I'll measure the LR pointer that I got. Might have an LR part number on.

Why would you want to change the pitman arm?

  12. Measured up (no LR part number): Inner hole ~16mm ID, outer bit with pointer ~44mm. Looks about the right size.

Saves me the hassle of buying something to take one off my old box straight away... plus likely I have to re-fit it temporarily to get some purchase on the bolt on the puller I dont yet have.

Probably cheaper than a hydraulic puller!

Why not take it to someone with a hydraulic press

I used a 6 inch 3 leg puller from Cromwell Tools.. one of their own Kennedy brand..

[I used to walk round to their Portsmouth branch at lunch time, wave my ID card and get trade prices because McMurdo where I worked was a good customer of theirs.]
With the nut loosened but not removed and a lot of torque on the puller bolt, steering box still bolted in place, a massive bang and the arm comes off..

I also managed to get the crank gear off a crankshaft with it..

just take the nut off, remove the lock washer. then you can wrangle the box out of the chassis.
Take it to someone who has a hydraulic press. They have bearing plates that Will remove the pitman arm easily.

I got lucky, I soaked it in penetrating oil all week…then re-fitted and a combination of 33mm puller, ring spanner, foot and bumper got it off…

That looks like quite a nice puller to try and get my steering wheel off…

guaranteed to crack the plastic that stick out the bottom. Avoidable as long as you're aware.
