Steering box is scary

Oh my god if I knew how notchy and rough my fitted steering box was I would have hardly driven anywhere …



Centre mark is nowhere near where it should be either…

 

The recon one looks good.

when I had the old one off, sat on the bench next to the new (recon N2) box I asked my wife to turn the new one by hand - easy to turn and silky smooth. She tried the old one and couldn’t budge it. Eekk..

 

What did it feel like, turning the steering, with the front wheels off the ground?

 

Mine felt ok when actually turning the wheel, all those linkages and pins etc seem to mask how the steering box feels to me...

mine still felt stiff to turn even with the front up on stands.

Yes. Mine felt a bit stiffer, before I topped it up. I’ve had the van since 2006, but only topped the oil up last year. Made a little difference.

 

Can anyone confirm (or deny) this is the land rover dust seal that fits onto the steering box please

Aye, the one from my original box has definitely reached the end of its life …

 

just missing a fibre washer for behind the adjusting nut now... small leakage overnight.

 

Where do we source good recon boxes?
