My new alternator arrived 1 hour ago , im a little worried about it as when you turn it by hand there is a point where it sticks and requires a bit more effort to turn also it makes a noise when it does manage to pass this point do you think i should fit it or send it back
which way are you turning it, the brushes need a bit of bedding in and its best to only rotate in the right direction
The previous one that still in the van ( with noisy bearings ) didnt stick in place and that is supposed to be rebuilt as well
spin it round and round for a couple of minutes and see if the notch goes as the brush beds in a bit, if not it may not be a brush, is it notchy in the same place as you rotate it?
Send it back... There shouldn't be any notching!! Brushes are made of a carbon graphite, and as such are low friction... so bedding in is unlikely to do what you are experiencing!!
I have spun it quite a bit and it makes a noise on about 6/7 spins and then sticks in the same place , and then requires a bit more effort to move it as there is no pulley i have to use pliers sometimes , im going to speak to the supplier tommorrow
this is the second rebuild from a different supplier the first one felt ok before fitting but was noisy when in use
If it's an Alternator brushes run on slip rings so shouldn't cause a problem as opposed to the generator where the brushes bed onto the commutator where sometimes a clicking noise maybe heard. If it is sticking send it back.
