Do you want a sticker with a crossed out 'T' then ?

  2. i think the conversion is a good idea if you planning on long trips and you would like peace of mind,
or if you have a long term ownership and will be spending less overall on engine repairs..

  3. This is what really confuses me, how is it that a vw engine needs repairing more often than a newer engine?

Like I pointed out earlier scooby engines have their own issues, and a google search will enlighten :)

    For example
    http://community.cartalk.com/discussion/2119603/subaru-2-5-l-engine-the-worst-engine-ever

I'm not dissing the scooby conversion, as it's each to their own and all that :) but the aircooled motor was used by vw in the vans up to 82 before they moved over to the WC boxster engine in the T3

  4. That's why the 2.0 litre tends to be the engine of choice. As said before, each to their own. There have been similar debates about whether it's right to lower your bus or not.

  5. After reading this thread, I'll with no doubt stay with my type 4 engines.

I couldn't agree more with you Paul. The fact there are just soooo many old VW's out there rattling away must have something to do with an engine that simply works.

VW and Alfa Romeo only ditched the flat 4 because they couldn't winter emissions down. Citroën dropped it because Peugeot took over and PSA as a group went into platform sharing. Only Subaru kept it and to me it seems a bit of a gimmick like Mazda and the ******le engine.

  9. It's not so much about money or re sale prices for me but why would I lose as much money as possible , the reason I don't buy brand new cars is because they lose to much money from new

So it is about re-sale value then?
Mine isn't, so therefore I really don't mind what I spend on it.
It's all about the fun factor for me, and a stock 1600 isn't providing that anymore.

  11. Totally agree with you on this point... The 1600 is very under powered for modern motoring!!

    Correctamundo!
Mine will sit at 70 but you just know its doing the engine no good. Realistically its more like 55 -60.
I know people say that's fun; but it isn't to me! I'd rather get there quicker and spend longer on the beach!

I've got 2.0 and happy to do 50/55 all day long (it can do 80+) I can do 70+ all day long in my modern car but when I'm in the van I want life to slow down

I converted my van in 2008 to a 2l Subaru and it is one of the best things i have ever done. I took 2 weeks and and cost me about £1400. I later fitted a a new stainless exhaust which cost £450 but thats not far off the cost of an air cooled exhaust.

I use my van every day in a mixture of inner city and motor way driving and it is so much more drivable in all weathers and conditions. Mpg is much better so its probably not far off paying for its self now as i do do alot of miles and have done most the work myself.

I know its not every ones cup of tea and people say "keep it original" but then where do you draw the line with that?
I have seen so many resprays i couldnt live with interiors i don't like , wheels i don't like. Did any type 2 come out of the factory with alloy?
There are some companies doing some really quality parts such as RJES and Fellows speed shop which I would be alot happier bolting on my van than some of the crap made by companies that have been producing aftermarket aircooled parts for years.

Is it really a lot different bolting in an engine from a different manufacturer than bolting in a 2332 turbo made with all aftermarket parts?

Razzyh See to me that sounds like rosé tinted spectacles. I never truly believe that people happily spend time on our crappy roads in his country. France maybe but ours are soulless!

  16. its hard to argue with that ..:)

It's a good job everyone wants different things from their buses, or this would be a really boring place...
Some like it, some don't: end of story really.

I heard the new forester is going to be called the Subaru "Defender " after this thread ;)

Really - I think the Subaru 'Cugnot' might be more apt.
