Replacing the asbestos lining on OG Heat xchangers

  1. i didnt know it was there! I got rid of the cuffs on the concertina as I suspected that but thats not reall in that bad a place as its outside the air tract! I take your point - nothing I can do now. If someone had told me it would have been dealt with. As it stands just now Im gonna swap em out sooner rather than later.

  2. One side painted - need to bare metal the other one and paint it now.

  6. Will see how I get on when they are fitted. The only bit I didnt like doing was de-rusting the outer tbh. Still go one to finish and thats on my list for this afternoon.:(

  7. Nice one there - used similar. Good up to 600C. Not fitting just yet as Im just putting all my stuff together for a big push on tidying up the engine, push rod tube seals and possibly fitting new carbs!

  8. i'm just down the road i could brig mine round as soon as you want Dicky :p

  9. I dont do type 1 stuff ;)

  11. nice work there ...

i re lined my concertina connector thingys with tin foil and the wool that was in there, so it wrapped up,

but i was thinking,.. that you may be able to replace the bellow things with some sort of ali concertina pipe [ehhaust maybe] without any insulation,
as the new plastic lined ones melt when the get really hot ..
you could then do away with the grotty collars ...

  12. I did something similar. I put a posting on the old site regards the incredible melting tubes (carpy arent they) there is a replacement collar available and I fitted those. I would suggest fitting a 60mm heat resistant cardboard type tube inside the concertina and leave the insulation in there for heat insulation arther than it being sound deadening as I believe is its purpose. Jubilee clip either end and Bobs yer muvvers....!

  13. im wondering if the blue silicon that the barryboys use for their dodgy induction filters could be used

  14. Going to ask my dad today about suitable materials as he works on the steelworks and they have lots of strange heat resistant stuff. If there's anything he suggests I'll keep you posted and if I can get hold of stuff too.

  15. Fitted now and engine back together so ran it up at lunch. Not put heater control boxes on yet but will have these on soon. Without the aux fan running and on high tickover the output is warm. Noticed significantly more airflow through the left hand exchanger and wonder whether thats just due to the fan direction, interesting nonetheless. Going to do the flappers and the aux fan over the weekend and hopefully take some temperatures to see if its an improvement. will also connect the auxiliary fan and give some comments on if that actually does a great deal to improve flow at low revs (Im guessing it is significant!

  16. I bought some silicon tubes cheap on ebay from a recommendation from someone on here, not fitted them yet though

  17. i've just been told that with a fancy new exhaust i wont have heat exchangers :( BUT my dad was sourcing some mesh and some suitable fabric replacement for me and as soon as i clap eyes on it i'll get it up here so that others can use it for theirs. It'll be good stuff as he's a steelworker and they tend to know about heat resistant stuff.
will take it all to techenders in september :)

  18. So a propex is next on the list then. Dont think Id be happy without a heatingsystem as even though my exchangers were shot and various other issues I still got some meaningful heat from it and it would demist!
