Replacing the asbestos lining on OG Heat xchangers

  1. lol. Might be the same with my VW ones tbh.

On mine the flap appears to have come off the spindle and fallen inside so i need to split it to hopefully fix it
They need a few patches aswell

Why is it that its cheaper to lower the bus than it is too get good heat exchangers:rolleyes:

  3. What about getting the mesh liner sprayed with a ceramic coating dicky?
You could get the cases done aswell for extra effect and it also would prevent future corrosion

Might cost a few quid but if its cheaper than repro exchangers and makes your og ones last longer id say its worth it

    Just updated as I posted!

  6. The mesh bit is the bit I need to get rid of as its got asbestos attached to it (some of which has fallen off). Im beginning to think it doesnt do much other than stop the case rattling around and provide a little insulation. Ceramic coating is far too elaborate and costly for me;). Im looking at tin foil and filre blanket now.

Ive asked elsewhere but you dont know how hot the headers get do you so i can rate whatever I put in appropriately (if anything)

  7. If your that worried about the asbestos then hoover the mesh then give it a scrub underwater to remove it
It not airborne that way so you wont breath it in
Then paint the mesh with some wood burning stove or bbq paint and layer a fire blanket over it

That sounds like a good plan. That nicely scultered mesh of death would be hard to replicate but could be disarmed.

You've got me thinking about mine.

Don't worry, 99.9% chance yours are repro and empty.

  13. Dont know whether to say dont be paranoid or not tbh!

Anyway started to strip the woven stuff which Im asuming contains asbestos off.

The construction is: foil on the inside neares the exchanger, most of which has gone (very thin tbh, no thicker than kitchen foil) then the mes which is very fine and tbh is being held together by the woven stuff, then the woven stuff on the outside.

Using hot water its seems to be peeling off - dont know whats going to be left as the mesh is well gone in places.

  14. hes probably spot on! Im dealing with VW ones.

  15. unlikely as second owner and first never bothered with it for a good few years except keep chickens on/in it.

  16. how would i know if mine are original or not? think it'd be worth sorting just in case, now that i know.
is there anyway of disabling it until i can get it sorted?

Turn them off, or to be 100%, pull the concertina pipes off.
If it's a uk bus the salt would have finished off the original exchangers? but I'll have a look at TE.

  18. ot's a bugger as was only put right at tekenders but can't risk it with such precious cargo on board. i'd never replaced exchangers, didn't even know i had any until tekenders.
    thank you :)

  19. Right - spent a wee bit of time and theres just too much of the stuff still attached and the mesh is extremely fragile best bet may be to make some templates from them and find something similar. Possibly the mesh you get for doing dodgy body repairs would do it but need to be 42cms by about 20 cms. no idea where to get that from unless I do it in sections and go to halfrauds.

  20. apologies if ive opened a can of worms!
