Please help me to value this restoration

  1. Did a bit of camping when I lived in Scottish Borders, I have a young family now and I'm looking for a more convenient way to explore the outdoors. I also have a work van which is slightly too small for our needs.

  2. Rough it in your existing van for a season, plus an awning, while you do your research, you'll end up with a better purchase

People drive around in buses in worse state than that. Offer a lot under the asking price though.
Its a long way from a £2000 disaster rot box, but there may be more costs hiding ...
. I paid £6k for my bus 9 years ago, I have it valued at £9k. It needs work done on it still, it has cost maybe £30k to do 80000 miles in it.
If that bus is truly any good, and you are a joiner the interior is a tiny problem.
No bay window bus is a cost effective place to sink money.. I f you like one it will cost you.

  4. I bought one very similar to that. (£6k)
We used to have a Porsche too. Now I have a welder, a rusty brown driveway, lots of lump hammers, and a nearly complete bus.

The welding across the rear of the floor was just like in mine. Have a look at the ‘what lies underneath’ thread.

    Walk away
Brazilian one looks great, and we would have saved a fair bit of cash buying that!

  5. Keep looking you will find the right one for you.

Go and take a spin in some local for sale ones, it will give you a feel for them.

    Join up with this lot.

They have meetings, go and say hello to a few people, look at their vans. Tell them you are looking for one max budget 12K.

  6. Dont rush into anything and remember if it needs work, whatever you first estimate both in time and money double or triple that and you will be about right.

That is a nice van for that money.

It's correct, if the reg is right, it is a very rare bit of kit, if that is of interest to anyone.

Mine is pretty much exactly like that, I bought it for £7k 10 years ago and it's certainly cost a LOT more than £2k and still doesn't look as nice as that.

Having said that, as with anything restored - before and after pics are essential and there really is very little excuse not to have them.

  8. My advice, buy this for £10,500, you could drive it to Spain tomorrow and the steering wheel would even be on the correct side
It’s been owned by a member on here for the last 10 years and is much more comfortable to both drive and camp in than a bay!
These are the best of the VW campers and if you don’t like it after 12 months you won’t lose money on it [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

  9. This is true, but where you start can make a big difference to your journey *very zen*.

  10. Better than a Bay for a family too, much more space

And just as cool to rock up in :)

  13. Fair enough, but everyone loves a Syncro, don't they ;)

If anything Syncros are even bigger money pits than Bay ;)

    .... Told ya!
It's a buyer's market at the moment, with prices way down on three years ago ... They might pick up again eventually when all the rough ones go to parts but that certainly isn't going to happen within a few years, so you have time to get it right .... If you've only ever been in one once you should try driving a few as well. You never know you might hate them!

  15. Yeah, the brakes are the best bit, thank goodness. The gears are like stirring porridge, the steering is heavy, a pop top lets in wind noise over 60mph, they drink fuel and they're great fun

  16. and top 3 photos show some sort of junk yard in the background. that would have put me off straightaway.

  17. Is that right? I have only been looking seriously for few months so I have no idea about the market trends..

It is a bit of a shame as I thought I might be getting a good deal on this one considering it was meant to be all done and only interior to be put in.. as a said we are happy to put a bit of work into it but I would not want this to spiral out of control, because it will just discourage us, especially my other half as she already took some time to get excited by getting one.

  19. I was going to ask... is it worth even looking at a LHD bus for UK driving? Being from europe I did a bit of driving on a LH but for everyday use here in UK is it worth considering? I assume LHD buses will be slightly cheaper here in UK???

Nothing wrong with LHD matey, both of my bays are left hookers. I love driving them.

Plenty of the good ol' guys n gals on here have them too.
