Please help me to value this restoration

  1. I'm located in Edinburgh, Scotland.
    Bus is near Inverness

Not really keen on anything else to be honest,

  2. Some good advice on here so far, personally i would be would be asking whether the welding work done so far was a thorough removal of all rusted areas, or just the areas that needed doing to get it through the MOT at that time. Rust is persistent and tends to reappear in areas that are perhaps not noticeable now - see the comments and concerns above regarding the tubs and gutters. I would also be worried about the judicious use of underseal, which in my experience can frequently be used to hide problems rather than prevent them. A coat of paint after stonechipping is better as you can easily see what is there. If you are keen, plan to spend at least an hour underneath the car with a screwdriver (to gently prod suspicious/common areas) and a magnet to check what is metal and what is not - suggest a strong one if the underseal is thick.

  3. don't buy that one, just wait - something you like will be along when the time is right.

I'm not a fan of brazilian campers myself but look at this advert
    http://thelatebay.com/index.php?thr...anbury-1-6-air-cooled-brazilian-camper.84988/

Ok its £1,750 more than your budget, but it has an interior, it has done very few miles, etc It would be a much better van for you than the un completed project

Put a wanted advert up (Here, Volkszone and prototype bay) saying what you want and your total budget

And 3 years ago you'd have been right.

  5. Its worth travelling for the right bus.

Keep saving until the right one comes along

Look on local VW facebook groups. Join your local VW club and ask what is about

@F_Pantos know his onions and lives in Scotland...no idea how near he is to Edinburgh

  6. For 9k to 12k you could easily buy a complete ready to use van in good condition with mot. You can go online and check mot history entering the registration number. You would see the recent mots with fails lists and you could check each fail has been repaired and not covered over with underseal. I would ask for a new mot, if not walk away.

  7. some very good advice on this thread.

This statement would make me run a mile: ".. it would sail through a MOT". Really? if that were true then surely the seller would be selling it with an MOT?

As above, i don't think your 3k remaining budget would get this finished, through an mot and an interior bought/ fitted. FWIW i fitted out my own interior, good quality materials from a local joiner who i also paid mates-rates to make up the bed boards, panels, headliner, buddy box etc which i then fitted myself along with new foams covered by me in OG second hand westy cloth, ad in the sound insulation and cheap vinyl flooring, mat matz curtains.. still cost c£1,500.

Isnt the MOT failure 30 months ago? depending on storage, in this country all that work could need doing again already .
I think probably all of us wouldnt have bought our current bus if we had asked beforehand on here , theres always something better around the corner for sale by a mate of a mate, personaly i would on this occasion follow advice given so far and look elsewhere unless all work can be evidenced . Its show time soon , theres always plent for sale at shows , well documented and drive away .

It looks a bit ropey to me tbh.. I reckon in a couple of years rust will be cropping up all over the place. And as said above, interiors are fecking expensive...

£9K should get you a much better van than that these days. Keep looking mate. :)

  12. I am between Edinburgh and Perth, happy to look at a Bus for the price of fuel etc. Tho Inverness is a fair old hike.

Can I advise getting yourself along to Volksfling in May. If you can make Techenders you will learn lots too. Don't rush into this, it's a lot if money.

  14. Nice one, good man!

The Inverness one should have been written off by now, unless the 'seller' provides loads of evidence of the quality of their work and an actual MOT.

So you won't have to go to Inverness

  15. @aniol1349 This man does Vw restoration for a living, so id listen to his opinion.

  17. Thanks, I'm slowly getting convinced against this VW now. I would really like to go to the Volksfing in May, I think it would be really helpful for us to see different buses in person.

yeah its really hard for me to notice those small things you guys are able to pick up. I have only been in a T2 once in my life.

  19. The Mot expired in June 2017 with a long list of major fails and long list of major advisories. In June 2016, again another long list of fails and advisories. You should google mot history check and enter the vehicle reg number and see for yourself. Personally I wouldn't touch it for any money. Its an mot fail project worth maybe 2k to 3k.

  20. My advice is place your money in an interest earning account, buy a tent, get some camping gear, and go to some shows and learn all about your chosen targets before spending your hard earned money. Besides you have loads of fun while you learn.
