By the end of the summer, 'im indoors and I WILL cook a pizza in our mud oven...made of clay dug (well, OK, stolen) from a field nearby. Here's the plinth, finished today by a builder friend of ours - the base of the oven should be about eye level and a storage area for wood underneath. Just waiting to get a 1.1m square of 8mm thick mild steel cut as a base (which will sit under the top sleeper layer, just balanced there at the mo) to put firebricks one, then brick-bricks on top. Then on top of THAT base will go the clay and sand dome. Which will be a v mucky and fun job. Need to mix sand in with this fab pure clay - and some sawdust too to create an insulating layer. Can't wait! That could be tomorrow's job.
Hopefully I can do both. And I have discovered the van is great for transporting big heavy sleepers and sacks of sand. VW should have called it something like, ummm, a portyvan or transportavan or something. . Oh, hang on...
Wow! If mine is even half as good I'll be happy. Looks like you could shoe horses with that fire! Fantastic. What's the pale outer skin made from? Doesn't look like clay...?
I learned on a River Cottage course, see their website. But this doesn't look too far off... http://www.permaculture.co.uk/articles/how-make-outdoor-brick-oven-recycled-materials
