Oil leak - opinions please?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by darrentalbot, Jul 24, 2019.

  1. Not a good start to the day. About 1/2 mile past a garage, oil light comes on. Turn around, back to garage. Put oil in 1600 Aircooled and this happens.

Appear to have lost a bolt on the filter housing, which is where it is coming from.

    Is this common?

    Likely to be terminal?

  3. Am hoping it’s that simple!

    Is it a common issue?

Make sure you use a copper crush washer and don’t over tighten it!

  7. Being dead would indeed be a bad day.

  8. It would - especially as I’m meant to be taking the kids away in it this weekend

  9. Look on the bright side, find another bolt and screw it in with some fresh oil and you have half done a service ready for the weekend.

Losing a nice looking mirror carp at the net well over 20lb last night is a bad day, replacing a bolt and refilling with oil is an ok day:mad:

That is a very bad day, did you drive it far with the leak?

  13. I think that bolt has a nut on the inside of the case holding the oil pick up pipe in place......to do it right the plate has to come off...

  14. About 1/2 mile - until I could safely pull over.

£2k recon engine on the way then

Why would you drive it with no oil in?

  16. I think that's a lesson learned.

It was unusual that one of the bolts fell out and suggests it may have been loose for some time and probably leaking oil all the while, until eventually it fell out.

We learn lessons, I will be checking my bolts are tight. I check my oil level before each trip as I am old school.

  18. I check my oil daily, like you - will be checking those bolts in future too. Engine and gearbox are the only bits I haven’t rebuilt myself.....

  19. Is the engine actually seized?

  20. Yep.

Can’t turn by hand or with starter.

    Absolutely solid.
