  1. :(

Engine out to investigate, I’m afraid.

  2. Need it running by next weekend, so no time. Recon already ordered....

  3. Ah, well.

There’s no real reason why the stud nuts should come undone if they’ve got the washers under them. Ditto for drain plug.

  4. Are you going to rebuild the existing engine or have you chopped it in against the recon one?

Sorry to hear this by the way. You were right. I was wrong. It’s a bad day. But look at it this way, at least it’s just an engine and not a van write off. Small mercy I know. Hope it doesn’t wreck your trip away.

  5. Agree - that’s why I hadn’t checked their tightness.

    Exhausted and expensive lesson learned.....

  7. Cheers.

Has wrecked next week, but by getting the recon (JK can deliver it by Tuesday), I can rescue the following week.

Happily, the kids are chuffed to have just me and the dog for a few days :)

  8. Chopped it in - gives me £400 back when it’s returned to them. Silver lining and all that!

  9. Jk were really quick with the engine I ordered, rang late Monday afternoon and it was there Wednesday lunchtime. Preservation Parts 1641, looks very nice I'm just taking an age to clean stuff from the old engine. Best of luck

  10. Good to hear. Mine is due on Tuesday- fitting it on Friday.

Anything you’d recommend renewing at the same time as doing the engine swap?

  11. I've been trying to make sure I have all the right nuts, bolts and washers for the tinware and other ancillaries by looking at the parts diagram and referencing it to the microfiche files as my old engine was not put together with as much care as I would have liked:)

I’d just buy a couple of bags of tinware fasteners!

  16. just been cleaning bits of tinware and cut myself on a bit that had been trimmed which reminded me of what @mikedjames had said about some tinware needing trimming to fit the new crankcases. So it looks like mine has already had some trimming, time for the dremmel.
for tinware screws I intend to use screwfix
EASYFIX BUTTON HEAD SOCKET SCREWS STAINLESS STEEL M6 X 12MM 50 PACK (1361T)
3 quid for 50 or there abouts

  19. While the engine is out I'd replace the fuel tank breathers and filler pipe and have a general tidy up/derust/paint as it's all accessible. As for the engine are you using the old clutch? If it's getting on a bit might be worth chucking a new one on.

  20. Clutch is a good idea. I’ve done all the rest over the course of a recent 12 week rebuild. Only thing I hadn’t rebuilt was the engine
