Oh dear look whats happened tonight in the Solent

  1. I'd imagine it'll be fairly straightforward to get it going again. Not sure when the next spring tides are. In the meantime, it's quite a good marker for Bramble Bank...

PS Soton-ites: reckon you could see it from Netley? Might take the dog for a walk.
    <edit> Hmmm, maybe not.

  2. They had an 'expert' on the news earlier saying that the route taken around the bank was commonly taken by shipping but that the ship appeared to do its left turn too early.

  3. Thank you the bridge team were pleased to provide a service ... it was always easier going through at plus 15 knots ... apart from the odd fishing vessel that decided not to obey the rules.

  4. thats stating the bleeding obvious

  5. The pilot was the last person off the stricken vessel....................actually he was trying to go down with the ship, but realised how futile this was when he could see the bottom!!
I read that the Capt. & first officer were still on board, I wonder how they are finding life at 45 degrees!

It's a lot warmer down south, it's flipping freezing in Peterborough.

  7. Read an online news item stating that the ships owners are claiming that the ship was grounded on the sand bank intentionally as the ship was already in trouble with a serious list.

  8. Correct, read post #61 :)

  10. He would have looked a bit of a d*ck - looking at the chart (out of scientific interest), he would've been standing in all of 600mm of water at low tide!

Looking at pictures if they hadn't beached it, it would probably have rolled over and probably sunk.

  13. It all seems a bit iffy to me! How could it b listing so badly whilst practically still in the port! Cargo slipped? Well in rough open sea maybe but in the solent!

I think early indications was a problem with the ballast.

I'm no sailor but I think the ballast helps a ship keep upright

  15. Failure of some computer system no doubt!

  16. If the ship used water for ballast then a stuck valve could have allowed it to slosh(?) to one side when making a turn rolling the ship over.

My dad used to work at the Port Authority on the river Tees and the computer on one of their dredgers used to regularly think the river was straight and plot a direct course unstead of actually going round the bends.

  17. It seems those roll on/roll off vehicle transport ships aren't very stable.
    Heres another one from 2007:

  18. Well I suppose if she had an auto ballast system to set her trim that is a possibility. Either way it was good decision to ground her out of the channel ....saved the crew, and the port from horrendous disruption.

My wife went down to the car park at Hamble Point and says it is visible above the buildings on Calshot Spit.
