no oil cooler on performance engine?

  1. I wouldn't give more than £50 for it, as the state of it's unknown. Forget the external cooler, just make sure the VW one is still there.

    ^this, I'm afraid.

  2. Here-here ..... :chewie:

  3. Overheated engine = junk, eben the engine builder has said it was overheated.

    Stay away,............far away

  4. Think that's best advice - lot of money to pay on an engine which may need rebuilding!

Just would like to know the full proper story about this overheating/lack of oil thing!

  5. Unfortunately when it comes to details like that, you'll be getting into finger pointing and name calling between the builder/purchaser!!

As an engine builder, you can only build an engine on the assumption that the end user is going to look after it, and heed your advice.... Unfortunately people seem to think that once you've gone bigger, then you can go faster... in some situations you can, but certain things have to be done to give the engine a fighting chance of being driven hard for long periods... in the majority of builds, the engine will still only do 55/60mph as a constant speed, you just get there quicker!!

  6. Absolutely PW - as a potential purchaser, I am not in a position to start accusing the builder or the purchaser of anything so can't really get to the bottom of what's happened without pi$$ing someone off.

I would like to be able to sit on the motorway at more like 70 than 60 though - is this not going to happen with an aircooled engine unless I spend big bucks?

No oil cooler on an air cooled motor , won't make much difference putting water in the oil filler .

  8. You've got quite a few things to do to achieve that goal...

You've got a splitty, so a 1600 beetle box is a must, and something around a 2l capacity engine (2110cc type 1 would be ideal) then along with the std cooler, an external one through a stat plate is going to get you on the road to success

  9. Soooo .... Just to turn things around a bit , how pi55ed off would YOU be if the the engine was toast and cost more than it was worth ?
Ask the questions and don`t buy unless you`re totally happy with all aspects of the purchase ...

I reckon the guy selling the engine will be thinking of making a quick sale, on the basis of sold as knowing its overheated and, when it goes pear shaped & you ask for help, the answer will be "you knew it was bought with risk"..for that reason, Im out. Unless you offer him mega £'s to rebuild it, then he will possibly help, maybe not.

The guys on here are advising you to walk for a reason, heed there advice, they really do know what theyre talking about!

  11. Hi Grub,my 1776 just runs the standard doghouse cooler plus has a full flow filter fitted.I use a Fram HP1 filter which is large so that increases the overall oil capacity plus it will have some extra cooling effect if you mount it in direct air flow.It will happily cruse at 70mph and passes the dipstick test with ease.

  12. Standard oil qty is 2.5l... Sure for a new build you might put 3 in, but you shouldn't be able to top up 2.5l, no way.

Be interesting to have a look at if only to clear up what's going on

  13. I fully appreciate that the guys on this forum have a great deal of knowledge & I always take that on board - just for my own curiosity though, think i'm gonna speak to the owner to find out his version of this overheating thing as things don't make sense to me at the mo, but if it turns out that it did overheat, yeah gonna walk away.

Got a DC code box in my split, so think that should be ok, just lacking in the bhp department!

Objectandproduct, didn't know you had a 1776 in your bus?

    Engine builder builds 1776.
1776 engine is now not installed because it's stuffed, if it wasn't it would still be in the purchasers van?
Engine now up for sale. I'm out.

  15. Hi Grub yes its a John Maher Racing 1776 type 1 with twin 40s

  16. Engine is still in the bus and being used, apparently runs fine. It cut out, apparently due to overheating, started up again after 15 mimins and still being used in van since.

So why is it being sold?

  18. he wants to go scooby for reliability as he's going to do a lot of travelling round europe.

There are a couple of bigger engines around for sale at the mo - a 2052 with 44s and a 2007 with EFi & turbo.

A bit more than I really wanted to pay, but how would these size engines match up to my DC code gearbox?

the 2052 currently has a 2.0 gearbox attached.

    Sorry, another question or three.
    How old is the engine?
How long (miles) since he overheated it and ran it without oil and
Did you get to the bottom of the cooler/no cooler question, because without a cooler at all without doubt the engine would be toast on the first journey.

Most sellers of second hand engines would not mention the overheating/no oil situation. This can only have been said because the seller knows that the first time it gets up to temp it'll seize again and can then say " I did say it had been overheated".

The gearbox - it'll be ok, but obviously bigger engine can pull longer gears and it all gets more quiet and comfortable if you do. However big your engine gets, cruising speed is limited by the available head/barrel cooling. The turbo one sounds fun. :)
