My 1970 bug

  1. Today i made a repair panel for the lower outer skin from a section of door skin cut from a donor door.
Still needs trimming down to size but the curve matches OK.

  2. Welded the bottom of the door skin on today.

Managed to warp it a little bit by being too hasty with the spot welds and its gonna need a bit of filler but nowhere near as much as there was on it before.

  3. First skim of filler.

  4. Inside of door skin painted in bonda primer.

Sanded the outside and more filler applied.

Little repair done around the handle recess.

Last bit on the drivers door filled again.

  5. Stainless steel M6 countersunk bolts, washers and nyloc nuts to bolt the hinges back on to the doors. Best £4.50 i've spent. :)

  7. I like a bit of bling. Shame they are gonna be hidden inside the door.

  8. More sanding, a bit more filler, a little more sanding and some bonda primer.
Needs a sand with some 320 but it should then be ready for some primer. :chewie:

Threw some more bonda primer over the filler patches on the passengers side door.

Lower window winder mech support looks OK with bonda primer on. :)

Sanded the filler on the edges and gave it some paint.

  9. I found a bag of bits i never knew i had and some bits i thought i'd lost. :)

There was 4 of these vents in it, though none have any of the foam left on the back and they don't fit into the repro heater channels i've fitted.

A couple of half decent indicators with good Hella lenses.

Some indicator base gaskets, though the holes in the inner wings the wiring goes through is slightly too large so they'll need glueing in.

Another of the pipes that go through the area under the back seat that the heater hose from the heat exchanger connects to. Unfortunately i now can't find the first one i found a while back. [IMG]

and an old fog light switch but without a bulb in it.

I also made a reduced throw gearshifter using bug, bus and aftermarket parts. :)

  10. Nearly level now. Probably not the brightest thing to do sanding when you have a hacking cough. My mask lasted 2 minutes before i coughed in it.

  11. Coming on good! I've found a '68 today I might be able to get my hands on so fingers crossed!!
I'll be checking over all the bits you've tackled

  12. Ooh, nice. Late bugs are the next big thing. ;)

  13. Did a bit more sanding, added some stopper, sanded a little more.
Got fed up as it looks the same as before but is a lot smoother.

For a change of pace i sanded the inner again and added some stopper to that instead.
Most of that is hidden behind my kamei accessory door pockets though so not too worried how smooth it is.

  14. Got the inner skin of the door sanded and coated in bonda primer.

Needs some runs sanding out and i think it might need a little more filler too as theres a couple of low spots still.

Outer still needs needs a little more sanding too.

  16. Just had to spend the day fitting a new shower as the previous one burst into flames as i was using it last.
None of the cables were the right length and the pipework was buried in the wall before it was plastered and tiled and didn't match up with the position of the showers inlet even though it was the same make and supposidly a direct replacement.

Got the basin drain to do next as i broke the pop up plug bit.

  17. Gave the outside of the door another sand then a coat of bonda primer. :)

Bug is still mostly incomplete. :(

  18. Managed to find a bulb in the bottom of my toolbox that fits my fog light switch and also found the other pipe thing that runs under the back seat from the heat exchangers.
Painted some of the small bits and bobs silver with a few aerosols of poundlands finest and sanded the rest of the door ready for some primer. Just need the weather to warm up a bit as its 15c and 95% humidity in my garage so a bit too damp to spray at the mo. :(

One of my mates in our local VW club has a pair of floorpans for £40 each but i don't have the cash at the moment and not sure how long he'll keep hold of them before selling to someone else.

  19. Had to move the panels around in my westy to access my toolbox and noticed a few marks on the bonnet. :(

Looks like it might need to be sanded back and a couple more coats of paint applied. :(

  20. Todays bit of fun while i babysit the plasterers. Theres possibly a complete loom in this pile, plus theres another bag of extra wires from a couple of others i can get the extra wires i need from.
