My 1970 bug

  1. Well rain has stopped play on working on my westy as there was a river flowing underneath it so had a bit of a tidy up in my garage and the sheds and found a few more bits i though were lost.

Steering column finally turned up hidden in my stack of metal in the corner of the shed. It does look like a bit like a scaffy bar if you don't look too closely.

Also found this coffee jar containing the long wires from a 1303 loom i disassembled many years ago. Saves me buying more wire to wire in some accessories.

  2. Dug the front wing out of the corner of the garage and gave it a bit of a clean up.
Still needs the primer sanding off and repriming as theres a few microblisters in it.

  3. Found a small puddle in my garage today. :(
    [IMG]
Thought i'd managed to sort the leaks out as its been dry inside for a good few months.

  4. This arrived in the post today. :)

  5. Emptied my westy out ready for the weekend and put the bugs bonnet back where it belongs.

  6. Not easy getting anything done when you need to remove 1/2 the parts before any work can begin. :(
    [IMG]
Insides of the doors got a sand today ready for a few coats of primer.

Gave the middle of the roof a bit of a clean ready to stick a few sheets of silentcoat on it.

Been trying to find a cheap 1200 style headliner and failing miserably.
Someone at Tatton a few years back had them for £40 but i've lost their flyer and can't remember who it was selling them, only that they also had cheap carpet sets.

  7. Got the outside of the driver's door sanded with 320grit ready for a few coats of primer.
Just need to figure out where to hang it so i can paint all around the edges. Ideally i'd like to do the inside and outside in the same day without having to move it about too much.

Drivers wing sanded back, stoppered and sanded again ready for another couple of coats of primer.

Not looking too bad considering the condition it was in. Its a genuine one though so i thought it deserved to be rescued. New headlight bucket welded in and dozens of small dents hammered out.

  8. Had a wee run down to the beach with the dogs today then an ice cream on the way back. :)

Managed a couple of hours in the garage when we got back and got one of the doors and the wing primered. Started on the inside of the door first but got a thumb print sized reaction in the bottom corner so did the outside instead.

Wing looks a lot better now too.

  9. Really gonna have to get my arse in gear and get it finished as its now booked into the show at Tatton in August.
Its under the custom class even though its only gonna be slightly lowered with some alloys.

It's coming together nicely & much respect coz I certainly haven't got your patience:thumbsup:

  11. Means I'm gonna have to dig my tent out of my parent's loft where it's spent the past 15 years instead of camping in the camper at tatton though.

Just stoppered a few marks in the door. Not sure whether to give it another coat of primer or just sand and go straight to topcoat.

  12. There's probably a different between patience, stubbornness, plain pigheadedhess and not knowing when to admit defeat and five up.

  13. Gonna hopefully get the wing painted in topcoat this afternoon, and the one i made a huge run on has been sanded and will be blown over again.
Means i can then get them out of the garage as they are a bugger to store and theres not really enough space to fit them to the car and still be able to work around it.

  14. Repainted the edge of the engine lid after i scratched the paint on it. Did the inside too around the hinges as there was still primer showing in places.

    Painted the front wing.

Sanded the run on the edge of the back wing and applied a couple more coats over the area.
Managed to get another run in the exact same place though so i'll just block it out when colour sanding. Theres 4 coats on it so theres enough paint to do it.

Had a fire in the garden burning all the offcuts of wood, bits of tree and anything else that was flammable.

  15. Just threw all the old used paper paint filters into the fire and the flaming mushroom cloud that rose 10ft into the air was rather spectacular. I still have my eyebrows and hair too.

  16. Had this quality klokkerholm (or possibly IGP) panel arrive from JK today.

Seems to fit where it should anyway and for under £30 with a 10% discount i can't complain too much.

  17. Got the inside of one door primed and a few bits stoppered.

Made a start on the outside of the other door but it kept drizzling then stopping just as i put stuff back inside the garage so i gave up for the day.

Nice shiny (and not worn) steering box.

Gave the drop link a coat of gloss black enamel to tidy it up a bit.

Need to find a new 8.8 strenght M12 x 45mm part threaded bolt as the old one was chewed up a bit with the windy gun. The ones VWHeritage and most other places sell have thread going too far up the bolt.

Painted the flange (fnar fnar) a coat of black too.

  18. Dug the engine out of the bottom of the shed this afternoon.
Will need a bit of a cleanup and repaint i think. Not sure about the generator but i've got a spare with new bushes anyway.

I think the starter motors are multiplying as i'm sure i didn't have this many.

Don't think the master cylinder is salvagable as theres rust everywhere. :(

  19. Checked to see if the replacement door hinge fits to the A pillar OK before i paint it and bolt it to the door.
    It does.

Still trying to find some off white piping to replace the crumbling stuff on the seat bases.
White is easy to come by but not the colour stuff i need.

Rear kick panels cleaned up OK considering they've spent 2 deceades in a bag in a damp shed.
They both have an ickle VW badge embossed on them too.

  20. Marked up the cuts on the napoleons hat section.

Gonna cut both ends off and swap them left to right so the brake master cylinder mountings are on the right side.
