It got a bit worse after i poked it a little. Seems the panel just infront of the vertical seam is double skinned and rots from the inside out where it meets the battery tray. I also chopped a bit out of the inner arch/splash plate area as it had rotted along the seam with the battery tray. Its double skinned there above the battery tray level too.
Plenty of cavity wax through the paint can lid once you have repaired that Should protect that are after repair
I think its a stupid design fault made by VW. I don't remember seeing the same pressing used on early bays as the fuel filler is in a different place. Gonna get a load of wax in there after. It lasted 10 years without any in there to be honest.
First bit welded in to fill the hole: Rest made up, welded in and painted: Just needs some underseal and the outer part of the arch repairing now.
Still trying to get the last few bits sorted out before Dubs In't Dales this weekend and its pishing it down now. Finally gonna use my Westfakia trailer for what it was built for (transporting my missus' scooter) instead of it being filled up with garden rubbish for the tip run.
basking in sunshine here... at least you have brakes this time... btw can`t you lift the scooter in the van?
Pedal seems firm now instead of hitting the carpet and the reservoir is still full of brake fluid. Scooter won't fit inside as its a westy so theres only about 3 square foot of floor space in it. Awning, chairs and table plus bedding go above the engine and theres not enough height under the overhead locker anyway.
This arrived in the post this morning: Not brilliant quality but it'll have to do. Just need some good weather to get it welded in now and the forcast isn't looking good all week.
Yours looks better than the same one I ordered and fitted the other week! Mine took quite some fettling to get it to fit right...
Theres not much wrinkling on the curved bits on this one and I measured it and its also about 3/4" higher than the same panel i repalced about 10 years ago so it'll replace all the rot. Maybe they've got better tooling now?
Choppy, choppy, choppy. Some bits of rot cut out. Previous owner nailed a fog light on here. Battery tray trying to eat its way out the rear corner. On the plus side i have this much clearance under the roof trusses with my camper on a set of 2 ton axle stands.
I have about negative that amount of headroom in my garage, without any axel stands Need to raise the roof!
It was with a 150W halogen worklight next to me but it went pop. I haven't fitted the front doors yet so the wind still blows in. They are gonna catch the slope on my drive when they are opened so i'll have to chisel 2" of concrete off before i fit them.
Chopped the rot out of the rear corner. Just need to figure out how to repair the edge of the battery tray before welding a strip of steel into the corner.
