It's an earlier one 1997/8 I think, but I've not seen it yet.

  2. The Brazilian bay doesn't use the modern Vw 1.4 that kicks out 122ps (like the UK polo).
It uses a much less powerful 1.4 Vw engine - 78hp?
No idea where anyone would source one of the brazil bay engines or why anyone would bother fitting one

  3. Just make sure that if you go for subaru you also prepare to replace your gearbox soon.

    Ignore that ^^^ it's complete bo11ox.
I ran mine perfectly happily for 5-6 years on a bogo box.
@Sick Boy runs his perfectly happily on a standard box. @baygeekster runs his perfectly happily on a standard box. @Moons runs his perfectly happily on a standard box. @Pickles runs his happily on a standard box. @bernjb56 runs his perfectly happily on a bogo box Etc etc.
In fact I'd wager the vast majority of scooby bus owners have standard vw boxes.
How many do you know who have killed vw boxes?

The original poster asked for thoughts. Having driven a Brazilian bay with the 1.4 engine and finding it very smooth and quite adequate for the purpose, and not wanting to break land speed records I liked it. Those are my thoughts. They may not be everyone's idea of a great conversion, but it's an option!

It's an option admittedly, just not a very good one!

    Have you driven one?

At 78 bhp and more expensive to do than going scooby, I'm not interested in driving one.

  10. ignore him ^ just wishfull thinking. those gearboxes wear off even with stock engines. they just dont fail rapidly

You don't half talk rubbish. It's less "wishful thinking" and more "fact".
So answer the question. How many scooby bus owners do you know who have lunched their gearboxes?
Sold that box for £3k yet?

I often wonder why more people don't fit Diesel engines. Plentiful supply and less of an issue with cooling. Good power and mpg.

I understood it was because they run hotter.
No idea where I got that from though.

  15. I suppose its mainly to do with configuration ... anyway diesels have their haters too ... mainly from the green crowd.

  16. Would love to put my 2 litre tdci in the bus.

The green crowd don't like old motors full stop ...never mind engines .

My mate likes to put TDI's in everything.. the one thing he reckons that puts folks off, is you really need to fit a gearbox from a diesel to get the revs down to a bearable level at cruising speed. When he first put a TDI in his split with a bay box it was apparently deafening at 55

What about that guy that put a diesel in his bus that works at Johnson autos at Wymeswold ...now that was a proper conversion ...engine under his seats ...prop shaft ...rear axle engine bay converted to a boot and boy it shifted .
