I have no experience of a scooby, just sharing what I found out All set ups are different: 2110cc vw. 185 65 tyres. 621mm diameter (smaller than OG) . 3rib 1600 gearbox = in 4th v quickly and 4k at 70mph on speedo. 6rib equivalent ratio 4.57 ring & pinion final drive. 1st 3.80. 2nd 2.06. 3rd 1.26. 4th 0.82. = not in 4th so quickly and 3200rpm at 70mph Original 14" (wheel) tyres are 654mm (approx) Some people have 15" tyres 185 R15 C = 674mm (bigger than OG) @Kruger what size tyres are you running? If fitting a 2.5l scooby, surely fit a NOS scooby 5 speed box at the same time? @Baysearcher s was great value.... definitely better value than my bears box or @nobody s rebuilt & NOS 6 rib
Nope. It went along the lines of: Find and buy NOS scooby box Pay a bloke to fit Subarugears kit Pay another bloke to fit box to engine. @pkrboo did a write up of his I think.
There is a chap on here, can't remember his username but he said how good standard boxes are but nobody listens
Since getting a Subaru I use my van all year round and in the winter up in the Alps I love all that rising heat. So does the dog.
True. This may be too much information but here goes. We do a lot of no-toll travelling in France so you get a lot of empty roundabouts. Going through them with my original 3 rib was perfect in 4th and 3rd gear. Then I got those gears extended and now I find I have to occasionally use 2nd on some roundabouts. That is the only gripe I have about my 3 rib gear box and I'm assuming we all agree that's pretty trivial.
Horses for courses - I no longer have a passport, and only use my bay in the British summertime now. You have however confirmed my deepest, secret fears about Japanese engines and bays. I'm off to sign up for a hand-built bog stock replacement 1600 T1 to replace my tired, but not yet broken original. It has done just less than 180,00 miles, more than 130 of them with me at the helm. The oil has been changed religiously every 3,000 miles over the last 22 years, but it is coming to the end of its useful working life. I'm changing it a smidge early because 100% reliability is essential.
