HOW LONG IS YOUR DIPSTICK?

  1. Just for future info, no need to drain oil for push rod work. Saves you £20

  2. Good thread. Had a blind Bambi about dipstick lengths. Summat else to look out for.

  3. the T25 all have a type 4 engine, but the dipstick is in a different location,,it runs trough a tube over the fan house

  4. Ah right. Might not work then. Cheers for that :) I can't believe how hard it is to find a type 4 stick. Ordinary 15cm ones are readily available.

  5. Well in the absence of any being available and without depriving PeaSoup of his (he may well need it one day) I have made my own from a Mk1 Golf dipstick which I got on ebay for around £6 inc postage. I cut it to the measurements provided by PeaSoup and ground marks in accordingly and hey presto - it does the job.

  6. Excellent - well done!

You should have done a few the same while you were at it and sold them on for a cheeky profit! - must be some buyers out there for them as they have proved so elusive to find.

Hope it works ok for you and stops you overfilling again.

    Nick.

  7. Which one did you get - there seem to be a variety of types for the Mk1 Golf? The one with the push in plastic seal looks like it will stop my leak, if the push in bit fits in the Type 4 dipstick tube.

  8. I've just sold a CU code engine and the new owner didn't take/want the dipstick.. I could measure that. But not tonight.. Early start tomorrow.

  9. Yes please, if you can check if it has a seal at the top!

  10. Yes that is the dipstick. I never thought about looking for a funnel but it would be worth seeing if it would fit over the original tube. I have to say it is quite likely that it would. The original tube is ever so slightly too narrow to get that dipstick handle into. Obviously if that does fit, you'd need to take the extra length of the tube with it attached into account when shortening the golf dipstick to fit the type4 engine

  11. Does it 'wedge' into the top of the tube to give a seal? I was thinking about trimming the orange bit down a bit to fit the tube - does that sound feasible?

  12. I was expecting something else when I read this thread :)

Very useful though as I have a type 4 engine so thanks for starting!

  13. Probably yeah,I hadn't thought of that but as its an almost fit if it was ground off a bit it should fit in to seal the tube

  14. Mines an absolute monster...I slapped it out and measured it and it's a very impressive 565mm or 22 and 1/4 inches

  15. And that was the right one for the engine? The measurements provided by pea soup earlier in the thread for his, were half that size and appear for the CJ engine to be right. I'd have thought that monster would be trailing along the floor!

  16. CJ engine.. I did say earlier that I had just sold a CU code engine.. I think/not sure that the CU code originally came out of a T25 but was fitted by the previous owner to my T2.. It had a long tube which came over the fan housing.
Unfortunately mine does not trail along the floor.lol.

  17. lol That may explain things - yes if it was from a T25..... still a monster though ;) you have to feel sorry for the 1600 owners with their measly 6 inch dipsticks :p

The message is clear - measure it and make sure you have the correct length!

  18. I've just asked my wife and.. Apparently mine is exactly the correct length. :)
