HOW LONG IS YOUR DIPSTICK?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Neptuneblue, May 9, 2013.

  1. Can anyone with at 2ltr Type4 engine tell me how long their dipstick is please? It has become apparent that mine is too short - leading to the engine being overfilled, based on the oil level reading on the dip stick, by an alarming amount.

I've searched on line but no one seems to be selling them - all dipsticks listed are for 1200 - 1600cc engines. That being the case I may have to fabricate something to act as my dipstick so need to know the length and preferably the location (from the end) of the markings.

    Cheers
    Pete

  2. Birdy will be along in a minute, I think he has had dealings with a few dipsticks over the years.

  4. Will measure mine once the kids go off to school and let you know!

  5. Ok, measured it.

From the bottom tip to the flat bit that slides flush to the hole it goes in to is 28.8cm.
From bottom tip to full mark is 6.1cm, and from bottom tip to empty mark is 4.9cm.

Mine is a 2ltr FI type 4 so hopefully the same.

If you get really stuck finding a dipstick then I may be pursuaded to let you have mine - I've installed an oil temperature gauge sender dipstick and so am not using my proper one, but was planning on keeping it in case I wanted to revert back at any point.

Let me know if you need any other measurements or reference photos of it.

    Nick.

  6. I'll measure mine tonight... the dipstick that is

  7. Mine seems to get shorter as I go along. This appears to be in direct proprtion to the length of the journey, sometimes it's nearly an inch shorter after a long run! ;)
Time also appears to affect the length, this again is in direct proportion to the size of the oil stain on the tarmac. :)

    Tuesday wildchild I'm a circle!

Don't know the 2ltr engine but on a 1600 there is a short tube I put mine in so this got me thinking if you have one has it been replace by PO with a longer one thus making yours look short.

  9. Thanks Nick - based on your measurements mine is way too small (story of my life) - coming in at a measly 6 inches or 15.5cm from the base of the handle to the tip!!! No wonder the engine had twice the amount of oil in it it was supposed to have!!!! AAAgh !

Mine id a CJ engine if anyone else has any comparable measurements?

The tube looks ok - it couldn't be any shorter. So it looks as if at some point it has been given the wrong dipstick. I don't want to deprive anyone of one that they might use but if anyone has a spare from an old engine or something let me know, I am stuggling to find them for sale, or if anyone is talented enough to be able to make one??? (could be a market opportunity)

  10. Mine depends on how cold it is out ;)

  11. Mine is from a GD engine in case that makes a difference.

As I say, if we can confirm mine is the same as you need and you can't find one elsewhere I don't mind parting with it to help you out.

    Nick...

  12. That's very kind indeed Nick. :D If we get a few more measurements to confirm what the length should be for a 2 Ltr CJ engine (I imagine it to be standard as the differences between the engines are mainly add on features IIRC) and they match your measurements that would be fantastic. :)

  13. Next time you do an oil and filter change put in exactly 3 1/2 litres and note the level. This should be the top line on your dipstick, but mine comes to the lower line. The discrepancy is caused I think not by different dipstick lengths but by the setting of the metal tube you put the dipstick into.

Now back to the double entendres:)

  14. The garage guy told me it had the wrong dipstick, but he couldn't find one to replace it either. It has been filled with the correct amount, but does not register on the dipstick and as time goes on regular checks are pointless as a true reading can't be gained using the short one currently installed :(

  15. wow your dipstick really is short then:(

  16. I have a 2l CJ, will have a look when I get home

I've got a CJ engine and my dipstick is approx. 290 cm ( just short of a foot in old money ! )
I have just drained engine to replace pushrod seals and it took nearly 4 litres to fill her.

  18. Thanks Betty 290mm did you mean? that matches up with the measurements from PeaSoup :) 3.5 litres is the correct amount - a little over fil does no harm but given my dipstick is 50% shorter than it should be the potential for overfill is enormous (as has been proved recently). :(

    290 cm / 290mm.....who knows.....it's about 11 1/2 inches long....sorry I'm pre decimalisation.......lol

  20. Anyone know if the ones used in a T25 would do for a type4 engine?
