Don’t get hung up on the date of registration – it’s the date of manufacture that is important and determines whether it’s historic or not. What does the M plate say is the date of manufacture? Tough luck if it’s an Australian bus without an M plate.

Only if the difference between manufacture and registration made the difference between historic or not.
Registered 01/01/77 would have to be '76 manufactured.

Yes but Robert keeps talking about registration and what his log book says and the DVLA records say registered Dec 2017. It’s when it was manufactured that he needs to prove.

  4. Seemingly I will Bbbbuuuuutttttt how the hell does the dvla send out V5s with different registration dates on compared to their records?
How are we supposed to know what's what?
I've got the very 1st log book, my log book and the paperwork for it's uk registration in 2008 all of which is 01-01-77 I think that whoever imputed the data onto a system has hit the 2 key next to the 1 key in the month field and until now no one noticed.
The problem though is the fella is now saying they don't care about all my previous papers (even though they sent them) only his computer info will be used.

It doesn’t matter what the first log book, the current log book, the import paperwork or what the DVLA records say for date of registration, it’s the date of manufacture that makes it tax exempt - or not - and the DVLA computer doesn’t know because that date isn’t recorded.

Obviously it was manufactured before it was registered but you need to prove it and if there is an M plate it will tell you.

  6. Yep I get all that but most people just pitch up to the post office with their log book that has a qualifying registration date just like mine and boom they walk out historic.
Everything in my possession as per the .gov website is sufficient to have done just that. Only my phoning the dvla because I wasn't happy with the post office did I discover the dvla's conflicting data.

  7. I think the guy at the dvla is talking crap, how can their records say one thing but tyjebpPerwork they send you, which will be from their records, say another date. I get exactly what you're saying. Very strange. Try sending it from. A better post office and see what happens, of dvla dispute then apply for the birth certificate and go from there.

  8. The birth Certificates take months and cost quite a few £.
What I need to kno is what exactly happens at the PO?
Are you effectively taxing it on that day? I.e. Take insurance and mot and v5 process a new ved at £0 historic and the PO keep the v5 and you wait for a new one?
When they put in my details there was no options on their screen to do anything.
They said that's because it's taxed so I can't tax it twice no matter what the cost.
The dvla man said if the PO staff don't know what to do they should ring their help line.
I get her to do that and the help line kept saying that on their screen it said 1976 still and as far as they were concerned that's why mine won't work. The woman at the PO said oh ok thanks, put the phone down and said that's that.
That was the point I insisted they looked for and retrieved my half of log book they wrongly posted.
    I'm really *******ed off.

    Insult to injury now!
I was looking up "prove age of my vw" and the vw owner club came up.
The site blurb said they could do it but only for members. So I joined. Now a member for £15 I can click the Age Cert link. Yippeeee!
    Oh no,
Now the "member only" says that the club certs are no longer accepted by the dvla!

Just go to another post office. The links you post for the birth certificate above are wrong I think.

I went to a large post office not a clue went elsewhere and simples. They even posted of the log book

My van was already taxed (paid on a monthly dd). I took in my V5 and birth certificate, they printed me off a ved receipt for 12 months at £0.00 and sent off the V5.
    Your post office is crap.
Tax it anyway, send off the V5 with the tax class filled in as historic, and it'all come back as such and they'll refund your tax.
    Easy

  13. I haven't posted links for birth certs that's screen shots of the VW owners club.
On their front page they say they can provide age certs for historic ved but only for members so "join today"

    I did

Now in the member only bit..........

"Our certificates are no longer accepted by the dvla"

    I've just added £15 loss!!

What exactly do you take to PO and what exactly did they do?

@Robert Thomas does your bus have an M-plate?

Unless it’s Australian circa ’77 will be on the left side air trunking behind the dashboard close to the fuse box, it’s not easy to find and harder to photograph.

  15. I'll have a look, however none of the information is going to be acceptable to the dvla if it comes from me.
As they are now saying at dvla HQ December 77 anything other than a clear 76 build date is only going to scupper me and cost circa €70 to obtain and approx 7-8 month wait.
If someone would just tell me exactly what I and the post office do then at least I'd know what to expect at the PO and I'll try else where.

The information won’t come from you it will come from the M-plate that is attached to the bus. The post office/DVLA may (they usually do) or may not accept it as proof of the manufacturing date but it costs nothing so is worth trying. At the moment you’re chasing a date that the DVLA won’t accept and spending money for nothing.

  18. I haven't got a birth cert.
    I've got

The original papers from issue of uk reg with the 1st mot saying 01-01-77
    The 1st uk issued V5 saying 01-01-77
The v5 issued to me 01-01-77

Find the M-plate and find out when the bus was made. Then argue the toss as to when it was or should have been registered. You’re assuming the error is with a date the DVLA apparently has on their computer, what if the error is the date of registration?

  20. Yep I get that.
I make no assumptions as to the error of some sort being with the dvla. They produce v5s and they issue the first index number. It's their information that conflicts with their information.
If the PO knew what to do and I knew what to expect from the PO then it seems they would have looked at my V5 my insurance my MOT and issued a new £0 rated VED for 12m.
Forget the £0 VED for a moment, I'm peed off that the dvla contradict itself and I was none the wiser. Especially important as all .GOV sites refer to V5s as being the triggers.
If the v5s show qualification then no other data or certificates should be needed.
