DON'T PANIC - this is an update!!! :)

Because I have been v busy (and a little lazy), I didn't bother to investigate this.
I used the bus for the first time in ages yesterday. Drove down the M3. Filled up at Fleet. Drove to Rownhams and as I pulled off the motorway it spluttered and died.

Before I went down the spark, no spark route (coz I bought some tools and "stuff") I decided that I should investigate the fuel tank vacuum as suggested by @fritt (but not as quickly as @Duble agent V.W.Ford :) )

I had mentioned that the po had a problem that he told me was sorted. It apparently is not. I went straight to the filler cap, gave it a twist and I was surprised but happy to hear a massive hissing of air.

I jumped back in and in a few cranks she was purring like a kitten (a fat, 41 year old, chain smoking kitten).

So thanks for the suggestions all. I now just need to make the 'breather' hole in my fuel cap a line up.

One last question, from where should the tank get its air? My air filter setup is not stock so has someone blanked off a pipe?

  3. This shows the breather, and the route it takes up the rear corners, and they meet in a Tee that would originally have connected to the air filter!!

Don't be putting a hole in the fuel cap either, as that is technically a MOT failure!!

  5. See the pic of my bay engine (page 3) well the pipe in the top centre resting against the air filter comes from the breather system of pipes, I'm sure that if I blanked it off I'd be having the same problem as you.

Thanks @Ermintrude but the fault has been found, vacuum in fuel tank. Just trying to stop it happening again now.

  7. That pipe of mine that I mentioned looks like number 9 coming from T piece 15a in Paul's diagram. Just to give you an idea where to start looking. ;)

  8. You might need to pull the firewall out (this means dropping the engine) as I've heard of the actual breathers on the tank being blanked off o_O

    oops - wrong Ermintrude @Ermintrude @ermintrude1978

I would like to blame the iphone, but the bloke holding it is probably the problem here!

if you have a hole cut in the floor for a sender hatch you'll be able to see if that's the case, or you can put a clean bit of pipe on the little hidden pipe behind the wheel well and blow into it and see if there's resistance to the tank etc....

I'm one of those dodgy crossover types with no 'ole - looks like I'll be blowing!
    thanks for the tip

none of them have holes...... people make them.

  15. Before you start dropping the engine try this, (just a thought) take the filler cap off, then find T pice 15a, it should be top centre of the engine bay above/behind the engine bay lid. Connect a pice of pipe to it (if it's there) and try blowing into it whilst somebody listens at the filler neck, see if they can hear anything.....like a hiss, you won't get any bubbles unless the tank is well and truly FULL! :D

  16. What 'hole' are we talking about? In my engine bay, the wall behind/next to the shelf for the original filter there's a disc about the size of a plate which you can prise out, behind it is the filler pipe and a breather (?) pipe that connects between the top of the filler pipe and the middle of the tank.

under the bed matress an access hatch is sometimes cut so the tank sender can be replaced without the tank being dropped, there's a how to on here somewhere.

that plate is what we commonly call "the paint can lid"
