  1. carry a plug with you ,so you can just put it on a lead...[to see if you have a spark]

next time take fuel pipe off carbe and crank it to see if some fuel comes out and not pointing at the lead with the sparkplug on it:D

  3. Frikin geniously simple. I was thinking reading the earlier part of this thread i would need to take my spark plug socket and what a pain that would be, but take a spare spark plug.....doh. Im getting one out of the garage to put in the van now before i forget. simples

  4. Or you can just jam a screwdriver in the end of the lead, rest it close to an earth and crank the engine over, no plugs, no sockets, "simples, kch!"

I'm near Portsmouth if you get stuck this side of the ferry, sounds like possible flooding, if it does it again hold your foot flat to the floor on the throttle( don't pump the throttle) and turn it over for 10 -20 seconds

I reckon there are a few issues going on here. Fueling, timing and general service stuff. Soz cp but you need to get it to t/es somehow mate!

It really does run great downhill!!!
Seriously, sweet as a nut, but struggles under load. More worryingly it just had a service.
It really does start on the button every day / time. It is only when it conks out it doesn't start again. For example, yesterday after the breakdown, when it restarted we went to steep hill cove and spent some time, it started again afterwards. This was to be expected as we stayed there for a few hours, but we went to the supermarket on the way home and it then started after 20 mins and then ugly petrol and it started after 5 mins. Strange!!

WTF is "ugly petrol" I have no idea Wat I meant to say there. "Stopping for petrol" is nowhere close :(

  12. Stay away from ugly petrol. It's normaly full of fat and tells you it's on the pill, then gets pregnant and your stuck with it.

Ooh. Hang on. That's ugly women. As you were. :)

  13. Sounds like fuel starvation to me, have checked the filter on top of the gear box isn't clogged?

  14. Sediment in the bottom of your tank - maybe?

  15. If you have one of those little plastic aftermarket filters fitted, bin it. I had one on my mk1 Fiesta and couldn't go over 45mph or it would splutter and die! Then a few turns of the key later it would fire up again. So I shoved a long thin screw driver through it until I could get some more fuel hose then I chucked it away. After that I could cruise at 80 no problem!
Here's the offending item, right hand side of the rocker box.

This could be the hot engine coupled with the throttle cable being setup so foot to the floor isnt full throttle.

Wont start hot and wont go.
I managed similar with a hose clamp screw on vacuum advance takeoff blocking the throttle on my progressive - it actually jammed the choke linkage so it never happened with the carb out !
Still did 70 on the flat just no hot starts.

So what filter do you suggest then? I bet 99% of people use those little plastic after market ones without issue.

  18. You can get bigger ones, on my bay I was using an old one from a Nissan Sunny/Violet (or something) it was about as big as a small tin of peas.
    Top left corner.

I've never seen one like that on a bay!
I've not had a problem with the little plastic ones in 8 years or so, you just need to keep them out of the engine bay.

  20. This is just the same as the problem i have .I now know its the fuel tank realeased a load of rust .The bus drove downhill [with some backfiring ] and managed the flats BUT any slight uphill and lost all power .After a short while it would kick in and drive and then stop again ,an absolute nightmare.
Ichanged the coil as it was thought it was breaking down when getting hot [made sense] but after a week it happened again .
The rust wrecked the pump and filter .Ive got the tank out and sealing it with a repair kit and it will be up and running again next week.Total cost for garage work and parts and sealer about £300 and 4 weeks off the road.
Check your filter for rust -- if no rust there just take the sender unit out of the tank and have a look in [ no matches lol] you never know .
