The glycerin stops the icing drying so much to give a crust on the surface ,but it's optional. Crusty cake is cool. A pound of brandy butter
The glycerin stops the royal icing breaking your teeth! Royal icing with just egg white sets rock solid and you might not be able to cut it :- You can buy royal icing mix that has glycerin powder or better still ready roll fondant icing if you want effect rather than plaster work ;D

Don't worry it can't be worse than my mum's first cake of married life. Someone told her than a small amount of blue colouring makes the icing bright white, so she added a drop that made the snow on the top of her cake turquoise. She's never lived it down, 45 yrs later my dad likes to remind her of the Santa's sleigh that surfed its way down the cake ;D
