  1. Had a look in the search bar but couldnt find it, i didnt want to show up my lack of knowledge!
which are the best blades for grinding rust and paint back to bare metal or near as damit, i have seen the cutting blades but if you arnt careful i suppose you could cut the metal as the blade says which would be devistating
Any help massively recieved i need to get rid of some or the rust spots on my van before they escalate to holes i have some bumps under my paint and areas where paint is missing and it has gone rusty,
Also just thought what is best to put on the bare metal to stop the rust coming back before placing primer on there?
Like i say any help massively recieved.

  2. There are stones for cutting and stones for grinding.....you want a grinding stone :)
You can tell the difference by sight......cutting discs are generall quite thin and flat whereas grinding stones are thicker and have a dished appearance, a bit like an upside down plate.
If the rust is only surface rust you'd be better with a flap disc or a wire wheel though......grinding stones take a lot of metal with them as well as the rust.

Depending on where the rust bubbles are, don't be surprised if you end up with holes. It's likely it's rusted through from behind rather than between the paint and the panel.

  4. Its mostly on the guttering and on the doors and the front panel where the paint has flaked off im hoping for no holes ha ha

  5. Don't buy 'stone' discs though...buy 'metal'
Also...look for the propylene wheels that look a bit like Scotchbrite pan scrubs (usually different grades...green, purple, black) these are truly excellent for taking off paint
    3M are great

  6. You may hope in vain :(...

Best for really removing all crud, rust, filler is a knot brush in a grinder. It'll remove anything, including bits of you if you're not careful...

  7. Mule skinner?

  8. Gutters are well prone to rot.....mine have a few blisters in them that i'm putting off cracking the paint off because there will be a can of worms underneath i'm sure lol

Whatever you do wear goggles at least and maybe some for of mask if you are using the thing up high as with a gutter - search for the @Kruger pics for evidence!

  12. I use the poly discs too... while they are awesome, you also have to watch that you don't lean on them too hard, as they will heat up the panel and cause warpage!!

  17. Thank you for the help guys im going to get a range of disks i think and see which one works better for me and give it a go i have goggles and a face mask which i borrow from work:confused:, im looking forward to getting started but im not looking forward to what im going to find!!! But its better to get it done then leave it to get worse! The finger sanders look like a good bit of kit better than a grinder for small areas i remembered i bought a rotary tool (dremel) type of thing a while ago which was chucked into the back of the garage im woundering whether that might be better for the gutter bit more movable. once again thank you for your help and amusing face pack picture ha ha:thumbsup:.
