Getting ready for a shock

  1. OK guys. here we go.

how much am I expecting to pay to have the inner front valance replaced on my late bay. It has a hole in it between the chassis legs. It has been patched once and I think it might be time to take the plunge.

found it when prepping the bay for the MOT in June.

I know the panel is £157. The deformation panel is pretty new, 3 years. Can this be saved when removing the deformation panel to get to the inner valance? Front arches are new.

how much might this work cost? Its the bay in the avatar

  2. really depends on how the def panel was fitted... I think you'd really struggle to take it off without seriously damaging it!!

Got any pics of the hole in question?

  3. Will take some in the morning. This bay is becoming a money pit. hold fire on the engine quote Paul. Think ( know) its gonna have to wait. That's the rear RH engine bay chassis top and now the inner valance. I am going to cry. At least everything else has been done.

  4. Im always unsure about peoples expectations aon a 40 year old vehicle. I had some significant work done on mine a few years ago - it was all complete panels. My view now is that only the metal that needed replacing should have been. Have it repaire properly i.e. the rotten bit cut out and the hole properly repaired. Unless its all rotten then why replace it all.

If its plated properly it should last a good few years, if your gonna put a complete new inner plus deformation welding and paint, hmmm £700 minimum I would say maybe upto £1000, where you based?

Surprising the inner wasn't done with the deformation, but they were unavailable for a long time a few years ago.
That said with the deformation off it would have been easy to make a nice lasting job of the inner.
^what he said for the price.

  7. Here we go. pics.

  8. Thanks for the info guys. when the van was done the inner was seen to be solid by the welders. They said it didn't need replacing but the deformation panel had holes across the bottom. If its possible I think I will get it patched up and through the MOT, buy in the necessary panels and then get it done in the Autumn. Seems Schofields have all the panels in stock. Based in Manchester.

    Thoughts on the images?

What zed said about while it was off! I did mine using a complete defo and inner off a scrap bus and it took me longer to remove the old than it did to weld it back on.
Probably cheaper to buy yourself a welder, grinder and spot weld bit and do it yourself!

Have you taken a screwdriver to it? Give it a good poke and see if the majority is sound. Could well be repairable buddy

  11. Have a poke around that hole with a flat bladed screwdriver to see how far the rot extends
Also in the bottom left of your pic it looks like its corroded and underseal is over the top so have a poke around there aswell

There's a guy on here, Jay Stacey, he's breaking a van and has loads of parts, don't know if its of any use to you, I just noticed him talking about the 'deformation panel' so it made me think about this thread. Apologies if its useless, I know nothing;)

From that picture I would say its very repairable, no need to chop it all out just because, the panel will be the same panel to replace whether an inch or a foot is rotten

  15. That isn't the inner valance... it's the closing panel between the inner valance and the cab floor!!

 bit of a mission job to do properly!!

Might be a case of chop out what you can from underneath, and make a nice repair section.... Then have the kick panels out and cavity wax in the front of the van to hold off any further corrosion...

  16. Will do and get back to you all.

  17. Think I am going to take it down the welders. Gonna see if they can sort it all out. Supposed to be going away in it in June.
    :(

  18. Good luck with it;)
