Gate security advice please

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Ermintrude, Aug 14, 2018.

  1. While I’m resting my ankle thought I’d take the opportunity to plan things.

I need to get a lock on the back gate, especially as there’s being a spate of scrotes nicking stuff from yards.

My dilemma is that it needs to be something I can lock and unlock from both sides (I can’t reach over and need to get in with bikes) and can hopefully use the existing holes in the stonework (conservation and heritage folks don’t like us making holes).

A new gate is not an option as would require permission and having one made to the original specifications when the house was built. Sod that!

Obviously any lock needs to not be easily unscrewed from either side too. There’s so many different type locks and bolts around I don’t even know which would be suitable.

    Any guidance greatly appreciated. :)

  2. Just put burglars welcome at own risk , they won’t risk especially if they’ve heard about the cellar :D

  3. the cellar is a space of clean, tidy, peace ad harmony now.... because all the stuff is now cluttering up the rest of the house and sheds! :D
If they got into the house, good luck to them finding anything of value, god knows i've tried! But it's my garden furniture, bikes etc. I have a security light but seems that is not deterring them

They're obviously going around the village in vehicles as there's a lot of york stone slabs going too :(

I need to work out how to chain and anchor my front garden bench too at some point (they could just lean over the wall and grab that :(

Just put a big “ SOUTHERNER LIVES HERE” sign on the gate, that should keep the burglars away

  6. oh definitely but as with most security, it's about making it a little less attractive/accessible for them.... and making next doors look a more appealing prospect :D

obviously i mean the crabby neighbours not my lovely carla!

  8. Wouldn’t a simple Yale type lock work? Unlock with a key from the outside and the lever from the inside.

  9. bah!

  10. i've no idea if that'd work and where the springy locky bit (i'm guessing there's a technical term for it) would go?

  11. Or a mortise lock. But they can still climb over the gate.

  12. not fussed about them climbing, tbh they're more likely to be seen by neighbours opposite if they do.... do you mean with keyhole right through? how would it attach so the whole thing can't be easily unscrewed?

As it’s easy to climb some sort of shed alarm might be better.

I had one of these on my shed until I set it off and frightened myself

  19. Yes keyhole right through. Not sure about the attaching. Maybe a plate on the outside and use shear bolts?
